The Legend of Zelda franchise is on the verge of kicking off a brand-new era. Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise is second only to Super Mario in terms of popularity, with multiple games in the series standing tall as some of the highest-rated games ever made. In fact, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the highest-rated game ever with a stunning 99 critic score – a record that will almost certainly never be beaten.
With Zelda such a major franchise for Nintendo, it’s no surprise that it has had a huge presence on nearly every console from the company dating back to the days of the NES. While no new Zelda projects have been officially announced for the Switch 2 at the time of this writing, the OG Switch was home to multiple Zelda games, including the groundbreaking Breath of the Wild and its ambitious sequel Tears of the Kingdom, a Link’s Awakening remake, and the first-ever Zelda game to feature Zelda herself as the primary main character, Echoes of Wisdom. Zelda fans are anxious to learn what’s next for the franchise, but we should have answers sooner rather than later.
Official Nintendo Announcement Lends Credibility to Big Zelda Switch 2 Game Leak
A recent official announcement from Nintendo makes the big Zelda Switch 2 leak a lot easier to believe.
Ocarina of Time Remake Will Be the Calm Before the Storm
To date, no new Zelda games have been officially revealed for the Switch 2, but reputable leaks that have since been corroborated suggest that a full-blown Ocarina of Time remake is in development. What exactly this remake will entail remains to be seen. It could be focused entirely on delivering a graphical upgrade with various other bells and whistles like the 3DS remake, or it could be something far more transformative.
While leaks should always be taken with a grain of salt, chances are good that the Ocarina of Time remake is real and coming to the Switch 2 this holiday season. It is the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise after all, so it seems like the perfect project to celebrate. In any case, the OoT remake will likely be revealed at the big annual Nintendo Direct in June, though that is just speculation at this time.
Whenever it’s revealed and comes out, the Ocarina of Time remake will help usher the Zelda franchise into a new era on the Switch 2. But its status as a remake of an existing Zelda game means it will really just be an appetizer for what’s to come. Nintendo is almost assuredly already deep in production on a new 3D Zelda game on the scale of titles like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and while it may take years before it’s revealed, it will likely be a system-selling game whenever that happens.
The Legend of Zelda Movie is Coming in 2027
While video games will always be the most important thing when it comes to The Legend of Zelda, the franchise is starting to move in some exciting new directions. On May 7, 2027, a Legend of Zelda film adaptation will hit theaters, potentially kicking off a brand-new series of blockbusters if Nintendo’s Super Mario animated movies are any indication.
Specific plot details for the Legend of Zelda movie are still being kept secret for now, but we do know that the film is being directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner series and more recently, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. We also know that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has been cast as Link, while Bo Bragason is playing Princess Zelda.
