Sony has officially announced price increases across all tiers of PlayStation Plus, marking the end of an era for the service. When Microsoft announced its controversial Xbox Game Pass Ultimate price increase last year, Sony earned a great deal of praise for staying firm with the PlayStation Plus price. Sony successfully positioned PlayStation Plus as the more affordable option, and while that remains true, it’s still disappointing to see the price increase.
When Sony first announced the PS Plus price increase, it only specified how much the Essential tier was going up. For new subscribers, the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus has increased from $9.99 to $10.99 per month, which is not a massive increase, but is still notable in a world where everything is increasingly more expensive. While not mentioned in the initial announcement on Twitter, the Extra and Premium tiers of PS Plus are more expensive, too, though there are some caveats to keep in mind that ensure the price increase isn’t as devastating as the one Game Pass Ultimate faced last year.
PlayStation Plus is Now More Expensive
Essential Tier
- 1-month – $10.99
- 3-months – $27.99
- 1-month – $16.99
- 3-months – $43.99
Premium Tier
- 1-month – $19.99
- 3-months – $54.99
New subscribers looking to sign up for PlayStation Plus can expect to pay $16.99 per month for Extra (up from $14.99) and $19.99 for Premium (up from $17.99). Those that opt for 3-month subscriptions can expect to pay $27.99 for Essential (up from $24.99), $43.99 for Extra (up from $39.99), and $54.99 for Premium (up from $49.99). Notably, annual subscriptions have not been impacted by the price increase. Furthermore, those that are currently signed up for PS Plus do not have to worry about prices increasing for them, but if they lapse, they will have to pay the higher prices when they come back.

The PS Plus price increase marks the unfortunate end of an era for the service. PS Plus was once one of the best values in gaming, and while it’s still a very good deal, the price increase definitely makes it somewhat less appealing. This may be especially so depending on one’s opinion of the games that have been added to PS Plus lately. While there have been some heavy hitters added to the Extra tier, like Red Dead Redemption 2 being part of the May 2026 update, there are many who feel as though the Essential and Premium tiers have been neglected.
PS Plus Essential monthly free games have been met with anger multiple times this year by fans frustrated with the focus on sports games and lack of titles that appeal to them. The Premium tier, meanwhile, has been the most neglected of them all. The big perk of a PS Plus Premium subscription is access to old-school games from the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 eras, but those additions have been few and far between.

Take the latest PS Plus Premium update for example. While the Extra tier received seven games, the Premium tier only got one, the PS1 on-rails shooter Time Crisis. With so many major games from that era still not on PS Plus Premium, it’s hard to blame fans that may feel like the most expensive tier isn’t worth it, especially after the recent price hikes.
