It’s Officially the End of an Era for PlayStation

It’s Officially the End of an Era for PlayStation

PlayStation has announced that the physical era is over, ending support for older versions of the PlayStation Store and committing to a digital-only future. While digital sales have far outpaced physical sales for years, many fans still prefer the latter for many reasons. Chief among them is that digital-only games and purchases are not fully owned. For example, the PlayStation Store recently removed 500+ movies from digital libraries due to license issues, and no refunds were offered to those who purchased any of those movies.

Not to mention, digital-only games are almost always eventually shut down and delisted. That includes PlayStation console exclusive games like Destruction AllStars, so once all of these changes are in effect, it’ll be an entirely new landscape. Of course, older games and PS5s with disc trays can still use and play physical games, but from January 2028 on, there will be no support for physical games via PlayStation.

PlayStation is Being Sued After Recent Video Game Shutdowns

A group of four gamers is seeking a class action lawsuit against PlayStation maker Sony Interactive Entertainment for misleading consumers.

PlayStation is Ending the Physical Game Era….

Confirmed via an official announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Sony is ending the production of physical discs in January 2028. Any games released before then are unaffected, but there will only be digital releases of all games after that point. Sony points toward the trend toward digital sales, as one would expect, as the rationale here. The vast majority of PlayStation games sold on the consoles are digital downloads, enough to warrant this change, it seems. On this issue, PlayStation said,

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”

…And Also Shutting Down an Older Version of the PlayStation Store

ps3-find-thrift-store

Not only has PlayStation committed to a digital-only era for its future games and hardware, but it is also shutting down the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PS Vita. The logic is the same: not enough purchases in the store for these devices. As they shut down, it’s worth noting that eventually, someday, the PlayStation Store on the PS4 and PS5 will shut down, meaning that only physical games on hardware that supports it will work at a certain point. That might be far off in the future, but this is the treatment of the past that reflects PlayStation’s future. The shutdown of this PlayStation Store is staggered:

  • August 2026: PS3 PlayStation Store shuts down in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua
  • Late 2026: PS3 PlayStation Store shuts down in LATAM and Middle Eastern countries
  • July 2027: Complete Shutdown of PS3 and PS Vita Stores
  • PlayStation also announced that players will be able to download previously purchased content after these closures “for the foreseeable future.”

It’s worth noting that PlayStation attempted to close the PS3 and Vita PlayStation Stores back in 2021, but fan backlash saw that decision reversed. Whether or not that can happen again, especially in the current economic climate, remains to be seen, but the physical era is now breathing its last breaths.
