It’s Officially the End of an Era for Pokemon GO

Pokemon GO developer Niantic is officially changing its name and logo, signaling the end of an era for the popular mobile game. Niantic was acquired by developer and publisher Scopely, known for its hit mobile title Monopoly GO, back in March 2025 for a reported $3.5 billion. Over a year later, the Pokemon GO developer is changing its name to better reflect its new parent company.

This name change comes hot off the heels of Pokemon GO‘s 10th anniversary, which was celebrated on July 6, 2026. Pokemon GO took the world by storm back in Summer 2016 when it reached nearly 500 million downloads worldwide, which resulted in a net revenue of $6 billion by 2020. Although Pokemon GO‘s player counts have fallen in the decade since, it still manages to reach around 5 million active daily players.

Pokemon GO Launches New Feature For Players

Pokemon GO developer Niantic announces a brand-new feature being added to the game alongside additional improvements coming to the Today View.

Pokemon GO Developer Niantic Rebrands to Scopely Explore

A decade after the resounding success of Pokemon GO‘s launch, Niantic has officially become Scopely Explore and has changed its logo to reflect this new branding. According to the official PR release from Scopely, this name change is intended to reflect “a mission that has guided these teams from the very beginning.” The release goes on to note that Scopley Explore is not a separate company or subsidiary, but a team within Scopely driven by the experiences within its portfolio that focus on getting players to explore the world around them.

Aside from Pokemon GO, Scopely Explore’s games include the Pikmin spin-off Pikmin Bloom, and the developer’s take on Capcom’s popular Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Now. Players can expect these games to be updated with the new branding for the developer in the coming weeks. However, other than this branding change, the core experiences of these games will remain the same.

Pokemon GO has plenty of exciting events to look forward to as the game’s Forever Forward season continues on through September 8. Players had the chance to catch a special Gimmighoul variant for Pokemon GO‘s 10th anniversary, and a special Rayquaza event is on the way starting on July 25, where players will be able to catch obtain the Meteorite item that lets them Mega Evolve Rayquaza. Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Global also starts this month, with the event taking place on July 11 and 12, and featuring the Legendary Mewtwo and Mythical Zeraora as headliners.

The launch of a new in-game calendar feature for Pokemon GO players will help them keep track of all these upcoming events. In addition to Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Global this month, August will feature Pokemon GO at the Pokemon World Championships with a 1v1 tournament taking place from August 28-30. Pokemon GO players can also look forward to participating in the upcoming August 2026 Community Day on August 16, where players can vote for their choice of featured critter between Tadbulb, Nickit, Fidough, or Yamper. Despite the name change from Niantic to Scopely Explore, it’s clear that the Pokemon GO developer still has plenty in store for players over 10 years after release.
