In an age where physical game releases seem like a trend that’s on its way out, Nintendo has remained committed to offering players both physical and digital options. However, the company was recently dealt a major blow to its physical Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge production, which ends one era and could foretell the impending end of another. While Nintendo Switch 2 games are still getting physical releases for the time being, a shift in industry production priorities is on the horizon.
The debate over physical versus digital games has become a hot topic in the gaming community ever since Sony announced the end of physical PlayStation game production starting in 2028. Adding fuel to the fire was the announcement that GTA 6 wouldn’t release with a physical disc either, with retailers only selling a code in a box for the game. Nintendo has mostly sidestepped this controversy so far, but the recent announcement from a major Switch 2 cartridge manufacturer may force the company to reevaluate its physical releases.
Nintendo Will No Longer Source Switch 2 Game Cartridges from Macronix
As reported by MST Financial’s Senior Analyst David Gibson on Twitter, Nintendo’s largest supplier of Switch and Switch 2 game cartridges has officially announced that it will no longer produce the ROM chips used for Switch 2 cartridges. Macronix has been the primary manufacturer for Switch 2 cartridges, but is now exiting the ROM manufacturing industry after ROM fell to just 5% of the company’s Q3 sales, down from 26% the previous year. The company will now shift to NOR and eMMC amid demand for memory from data centers.
While this news is understandably concerning for physical Nintendo Switch 2 game collectors, there is no cause for alarm just yet. Nintendo still receives a portion of its Switch and Switch 2 cartridges from other manufacturers, and has shown no indication that physical game production will stop entirely. However, even if Nintendo remains committed to physical game releases for the foreseeable future, Macronix’s exit from the ROM manufacturing industry could accelerate a digital-only approach for Nintendo further down the line.
Although unpopular among physical collectors, Nintendo’s game-key cards could offer a solution to this production problem. The Switch 2’s game-key card releases don’t contain the full game on the cartridge, but provide players with a key to download the game digitally. But this approach to future releases could stave off an all-digital future for Nintendo, where the alternative is even more expensive physical Switch 2 games.
Macronix has been a manufacturer of Nintendo’s memory products for decades at this point, dating back Nintendo 64 cartridge production. With the company exiting the ROM production industry, the era of Nintendo and Macronix’s relationship seems to be at its end, at least for the Switch 2 generation. Nintendo’s major 2027 releases include games like Metroid Ravenous, The Duskblods, Kirby and the World Beyond, Xenoblade Genesis, and Pokemon Winds and Waves releasing later in the year, but it remains to be seen whether the prices or physical production status of these games are affected by the end of this relationship.
