Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Studio Comments on Rumored Lord of the Rings Game

Warhorse Studios, the company behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, has acknowledged the rumors that it’s making a Lord of the Rings game but won’t offer a firm answer. Many LOTR fans are clamoring for a large-scale, high-quality video game after recent entries have failed to leave a lasting positive impression, so rumors of Warhorse developing one have generated a lot of excitement. While the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 studio remains coy about whether this is true, it has at least confirmed something is in the works.

KCD2 faced stiff competition in 2025, but it still managed to become one of the most widely praised games of the year. After such a strong showing, the conversation naturally turned to what players want from a third Kingdom Come: Deliverance game, but some gamers may prefer something else from the studio. It’s not clear exactly what Warhorse is working on, but there may be a chance that it could be the Lord of the Rings game fans have been waiting for.

An Open-World Lord of the Rings RPG from Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Studio Could Be the Stuff of Legends

A rumored Lord of the Rings RPG from Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 developer Warhorse Studios could finally do Middle-earth justice.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Developer Won’t Confirm or Deny LOTR Rumors

In a recent Reddit AMA, KCD Content Director Ondrej Bittner replied to a user asking if Warhorse was indeed working on a LOTR game, saying he “cannot disclose details” but promised the team is “hard at work” at something. The conversation follows a long string of leaks and rumors that reached new heights after a translator said Warhorse is actively developing a LOTR game, having caught word of it from “credible sources.” Embracer, Warhorse’s parent company, does own the gaming rights to Lord of the Rings, so this would make sense, and while Bittner refused to confirm the rumors, he didn’t deny them, either, which could be good news.

It’s entirely possible that the “huge, immersive RPG” Bittner said the studio is developing is another KCD game, or even a brand-new IP. The former would make financial sense, too, given how successful the last game in the franchise was. Still, there is also plenty of reason for Warhorse to pursue a project set in Middle-earth. The IP has a massive, dedicated fanbase, and recent conversations show just how much Lord of the Rings fans want an open-world game, not to mention how much money Embracer put down to acquire the rights to such a title.

LotR Fellowship passing by Argonath Image via Warner Bros.

Bittner’s vague answer may not be a confirmation of anything, but it does leave the door open more so than previous statements from the studio. In 2025, Warhorse denied rumors it was developing a LOTR game, saying it was working on a brand-new fantasy game instead. That may still be the case, but in this more recent comment, devs didn’t outright deny the possibility like they did before. It’s a small distinction, but one worth noting for the LOTR hopeful. Moving from denial to a noncommittal stance could be Warhorse teasing that a LOTR project is in the works, but that could also be reading into things, so fans shouldn’t take it as a guarantee of anything.

Many seem excited about the prospect of a Warhorse-developed Lord of the Rings game. If the studio does make one, and it sticks the landing, it could be a needed win for the company, too, given Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2′s recent AI controversy, but nothing is certain until Warhorse makes a formal announcement. There’s no telling when that will be, whether the secretive project in question is a LOTR game or something else, so fans of both Lord of the Rings and KCD should keep their eyes peeled.
