Kojima Says His Upcoming Game OD May Not “Work Out”

Kojima Says His Upcoming Game OD May Not “Work Out”

Writer-director Hideo Kojima has multiple new games in the works, one of which is the horror title OD. Not much is known about the game, and the recent “Knock” trailer raised more questions than it answered. Now, Kojima has further discussed OD, saying it aims to offer something new. Of course, that’s what most developers would say.

Perhaps more intriguingly, Kojima discussed with ananweb (translated by Automaton) how he does not know for sure if his idea for OD will even work.

Now Playing: OD – KNOCK Teaser Trailer

“I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out. We’ve created stealth games and delivery games which were unlike anything before, but system-wise, they were similar to other games,” he explained, referencing Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding. “This time, we’re trying to change the service model from the ground up, so it should be quite challenging. We’ve packed the trailer full of hints, so if you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out.”

OD was announced two years ago this month at The Game Awards 2023. The game features the actors Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and the late Udo Kier. Kier died in November aged 81. Kojima said the SAG-AFTRA strike for video game actors that ended in July 2025 forced the team to reschedule filming for OD until 2026, but it’s unclear how much content Kier may have recorded prior to his passing.

For OD, Kojima said he hopes to travel around the world and visit “scary places” so he can become the first person in the world to scan a ghost and put it into a game. “I want to get an award for that,” he said.

OD is being made in partnership with Xbox, and when Microsoft made massive cuts to the Xbox team and canceled upcoming games as part of a restructuring, some feared that OD might have been cut. However, the game is still on the way.

Kojima is also working on a game with PlayStation called Physint, so he’s clearly keeping quite busy. Outside of game projects, Kojima is working with A24 on a Death Stranding movie and has partnered with Disney for a Death Stranding animated series.
