Kotaku Is Hiring A Staff Reporter

Kotaku is seeking an experienced writer and reporter to help drive our coverage of the biggest stories in gaming, focusing on everything from companies and communities to hit releases and the under-covered trends shaping the culture.

This role will regularly cover breaking news, contribute original reporting, and work on big features about the world of video games on a weekly basis. You’ll develop and source specific news beats while also contributing to the rest of the site’s gaming coverage. We want someone who’s as hungry to break the news of the next major blockbuster delay as they are to dig into the fascinating things players are doing in games.

You are a fit for this role if:

  • You can write and edit sharp, accessible stories about gaming’s business side and its cultural footprint, from major acquisitions to niche role-play communities
  • You have a punchy writing voice and are familiar with Kotaku’s general tone and subject areas
  • You can quickly turn around timely news hits and short analysis pieces that explain why a story matters and what the larger implications of it are
  • You’re eager to collaborate with other editors and writers to ensure our coverage is fast, fair, and full of voice
  • You have a keen news sense and can identify stories that will resonate with our audience, especially the ones that no one else is paying attention to
  • You can exercise strong editorial judgment and have a strong grasp of media law and journalistic best practices
  • You bring sharp angles and fresh framing to the day’s headlines, with a sense of humor and wit that matches Kotaku’s style
  • You are familiar with the major companies, franchises, and trends in gaming
  • You have the editorial sensibility to know when a story needs speed, when it needs depth, and when it needs both
  • You have experience developing sources and breaking stories that will surprise, inform, and entertain our readers

This is a position covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E. The salary range for this position is $64,000 – $82,000.

Kotaku’s US office is located in NYC. We are open to both NYC-based and remote candidates who live within the US.

**To apply, please email a resume, short cover letter, and 3-5 clips to [email protected]**
