KPop Demon Hunters Finally Sang Something Other Than ‘Golden’

KPop Demon Hunters Finally Sang Something Other Than ‘Golden’

Back in October, the singing cast of Netflix’s hit animated musical KPop Demon Hunters took to the stage for the first time and performed the film’s breakout hit “Golden” live on The Tonight Show. Since then, Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami have appeared at multiple award shows and events performing the song over and over and over. The girls kill it every time, but there are plenty of other songs on the soundtrack. Finally, almost a year after the movie premiered on Netflix, the voices of Huntr/x have performed a different song…kind of…it’s, actually kind of a bummer how it went down.

“How It’s Done” is one of the best songs in KPop Demon Hunters, opening the film with an absolute banger that’s full of swagger and fierce wordplay as the girls of Huntr/x ruin a group of demons’ night. So I was stoked to find out that the girls would be finally performing it together as part of the movie’s ongoing McDonald’s collaboration. The singing voices behind the Saja Boys, the demon boy band the girls face in the film, also came together to perform their candy coated bop “Soda Pop,” so no matter which group you supported in the movie’s stan war, you would be getting something out of this event. Now the performances are live on McDonald’s app and are spreading online. The choreography is fun and the fits are fitting, but unfortunately, this isn’t a live performance from either group.

Both groups lipsynced to what sounds like the original movie recording, and even cut out chunks of both songs. The “How It’s Done” cuts are especially tough because they skip over the second verse, which is the best part of the song. “Soda Pop” is also gutted, perhaps even more so, with only the first verse and chorus making it on stage. I understand the visual was probably the priority for this, and both groups look great together on stage. The Saja Boys, all dressed to the nines in formal wear, almost harken back to old school doowop groups in a way that is fun and distinct from Huntr/x’s less uniform style. But I’m bummed we still don’t have a new “live” performance of a song that’s not “Golden.” Maybe if this rumored arena tour happens down the line?

While it wasn’t the whole of Huntr/x, Nuna did perform “How It’s Done” as a solo act in Australia back in March. It’s not the same, but she still killed it.

KPop Demon Hunters is coming up on its first-year anniversary, and the promo and collabs are still coming out at a pace you wouldn’t expect for a nearly year-old movie, probably the result of Netflix and Sony scrambling to capitalize on a film they didn’t anticipate would be a massive hit. So at least fans have something, as it sounds like the newly announced sequel is still many years away.
