The Last of Us fans have a new reason to keep an eye on their calendars, with Naughty Dog teasing new franchise announcements coming on September 28. The celebration will commemorate the day of the in-universe event that kicked off the story of The Last of Us.
The narrative-driven action-adventure series from Naughty Dog has become one of the studio’s flagship franchises since the first game released in 2013. The Last of Us has received two wildly successful main-series games and both remakes and remasters of the duology, with the original winning Game of the Year at the Game Awards and Part 2 being a finalist for the award. The series also spawned a popular live-action Last of Us adaptation from HBO, which has won a multitude of awards, including several at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2024. Now, Naughty Dog is hinting at some big announcements for The Last of Us.
Naughty Dog Reveals The Last of Us Day for September 28
Naughty Dog is teasing some potentially huge announcements to come for it’s The Last of Us Day celebration. A new update to the PlayStation Welcome Hub on PS5 includes a unique dynamic background, featuring an animated collage of Ellie from The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2. Within the reveal, Naughty Dog shared that it will “celebrate The Last of Us Day on Monday,” hinting that the studio may have plans to commemorate the occasion. The studio did not give any specific details about its plans for The Last of Us Day, but teased “a partnership announcement” and “a very cool collaboration” to come.

The upcoming Last of Us Day festivities come as the future of the video games has largely been up in the air. Naughty Dog has yet to officially announce a video game continuation of the franchise, with the last new release coming in 2024 with The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered. Naughty Dog was working on a multiplayer The Last of Us game which was ultimately canceled in 2023, though some former developers at the studio called it “the best multiplayer game” they had ever played. Neil Druckmann did drop a cryptic teaser for “future stops” in the franchise in early 2026, though Naughty Dog has not shared any specific details.
While fans wait to learn more about the future of The Last of Us, some have already taken the series into their own hands. Mod team Speclizer had previously been working on a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 that would have allowed players to team up in the traditionally single-player series. However, the team shared an official announcement that development on the mod was being shelved in September 2026, after receiving a request from Sony not to release the mod. The shutdown is believed to be connected to the mod team offering early access to paying Patreon subscribers.
The ongoing TV adaptation of The Last of Us looks to have plenty in store for fans waiting for more from the series. HBO officially revealed three new cast members joining the third season of The Last of Us, including two actors who had previously lent their voices to the video games. John Goodman will be joining HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation as Joey of the “Heroes of the Highway”, while Ian Alexander will portray Paco of the same duo and Laura Bailey will join the series as Elizabeth, with Alexander and Bailey playing Lev and Abby in The Last of Us Part 2. The Last of Us fans could have much to look forward to in the near future, between Season 3 of the HBO series and potential news about the games’ future.
