With no official multiplayer mode on the horizon, a modder is taking matters into their own hands and building a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2. The Last of Us Part 2 released in 2020 to widespread critical acclaim and managed to snag the Game of the Year at that year’s Game Awards show. But even though The Last of Us Part 2 was praised for its emotionally-charged single-player campaign, many fans were unhappy that multiplayer was nowhere to be found.

The original Last of Us was best known for its single-player experience, with Joel and Ellie’s story the main reason behind the game’s immense popularity. However, The Last of Us also had a well-received multiplayer component to go along with the single-player experience in the form of Factions. Many fans of the franchise were hoping to see Factions make a comeback in The Last of Us Part 2, but instead they were promised a standalone TLoU multiplayer experience. Unfortunately, that project was canceled, and so there hasn’t been a proper Last of Us versus multiplayer in over a decade at this point.

Last of Us Multiplayer Game Was 80% Complete Before It Was Canceled

A former Naughty Dog developer who was once working on a new Last of Us multiplayer game says it was practically complete before its cancellation.

Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod is Coming

Naughty Dog is busy developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet at the time of this writing, and with The Last of Us Part 2 six years old at this point, it’s highly unlikely that the game will ever get a Factions-style PvP mode. With that in mind, modder Speclizer has decided to build their own Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mode, featuring various characters from the game duking it out. Speclizer recently shared 25 minutes of their Last of Us 2 multiplayer mod in action, with a promise that it will be released this September. The catch is that PlayStation gamers will have to miss out.

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod will only be available for the PC version of the game, which makes sense, but may still disappointment hardcore fans on PlayStation. Mods are a major reason why some people prefer PC gaming as they open the door to unique experiences like this one, which are not available on consoles, though the sad thing is that future single-player PlayStation games are skipping PC entirely. So while modders are able to release mods for games like The Last of Us Part 2, they won’t be able to do the same for future projects like a potential Last of Us Part 3, so hopefully that game has its own built-in multiplayer mode.

The Last of Us Part 3 has been hinted at in the past, but an official announcement has yet to take place. Perhaps the work that went into The Last of Us Online could be folded into a potential Part 3 so it could have a Factions-style multiplayer mode to go along with its single-player experience, but who knows what direction it will ultimately take. The fact of the matter is that it’s entirely possible there will never be a new official Last of Us multiplayer mode released.

If that’s the case, it’s a good thing that modders like Speclizer are stepping up to build a Last of Us multiplayer experience for fans on PC. It’s just a shame that most upcoming PlayStation games will be skipping PC moving forward.
