A talented LEGO fan online has shared their incredible custom Pokemon set, which transforms the iconic Generation 1 starter trio of Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle into mechs. As the Pokemon franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary, this fan has paid tribute by putting a fresh LEGO twist on three classic designs.
Pokemon and LEGO seem like a pretty natural combination, and fans have been creating their own custom designs for years. However, the two had never come together in an official capacity until this year, when the first LEGO Pokemon sets were revealed. The early sets have focused on some of the most iconic designs from the franchise, including Pikachu, Eevee, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard. The latter three are the evolved versions of the Pokemon found in this fan’s custom builds, so it would be cool to see them side-by-side.

These LEGO Pokemon Gen 1 Starters Are Secretly Mechs
Redditor HunterRoyal121 shared their impressive creations on the LEGO subreddit – all three Pokemon Gen 1 starters, Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle, built from LEGO. These builds are all very small, and it’s impressive how the creator has been so efficient with their pieces. Despite this, they still distinctly look like the iconic Gen 1 starters, and it’s immediately clear what they’re trying to represent. That’s not all, though. All three Pokemon open up to reveal small LEGO minifigures: Squirtle opens at the shell, Charmander opens along its belly, and Bulbasaur hides the figure inside the plant bulb on its back. The user describes these LEGO creations as “little mechs,” putting an interesting twist on these classic Pokemon designs. According to the creator, they have been in the works for around a year “in preparation of the 30th anniversary,” before it was ever revealed that official LEGO Pokemon sets were being released.

All of the fans in the thread were extremely impressed with HunterRoyal121’s creations, with one user even dubbing them “Mechemon.” Several claimed they would buy their instructions if they were made available anywhere, but that isn’t the case at the moment, while others praised them as being even better than the official Pokemon LEGO sets. It’s high praise, but the mech elements of these builds really elevate them to another level.
The Generation 1 starters have been around for three decades at this point. As a result, they very commonly appear in Pokemon fan projects. They remain some of the franchise’s most iconic designs, and fans have had plenty of time to grow attached to them over the years. It’s awesome how fans have continued to use their talents to make the Gen 1 trio of Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur feel fresh, even after 30 years. There have been so many fan creations involving these three that, at this point, it takes something really special to stand out from the crowd.
LEGO fans have been sharing some incredible builds online of late. Because of the nature of LEGO, it’s inherently a very creative community, but some of the creations have been remarkable, even with that in mind. There was a recent case in which a LEGO fan turned an official DeLorean set into the Millennium Falcon, showing what is possible when a creative mind gets their hands on LEGO. Whether more official Pokemon LEGO sets will be released remains to be seen. If not, fans can rest assured that talented builders will almost certainly be on hand to create more amazing customs like HunterRoyal121’s creation in the future.
