Lego Finally Announces A Mario Minifig Is Coming After Making Fans Wait Seven Years

Mamma mia! Lego fans have finally gotten confirmation from Nintendo that, yes, we are getting a Lego minifigure of Mario.  This new fig will arrive sometime in 2027 alongside new sets that will likely not be connected to the popular electronic Mario playsets of the last few years.

On March 10, the official Nintendo account tweeted a short teaser video revealing a Mario minifig popping out of one of the franchise’s iconic green pipes. “New form unlocked! New sets coming in 2027,” said Nintendo.

Lego has been making Mario-themed sets since 2020. And for nearly six years now, the vast majority of these sets have been connected to Nintendo and Lego’s best-selling interactive Super Mario theme. The line started with a boxy, brick-built Mario that contained a small screen and other sensors, allowing him to react to different Lego bricks and pieces. It was a really cool idea, letting kids build their own Mario levels using different official sets. Over time, Lego added more interactive characters, like a Peach and Luigi. And that was cool.

But none of these interactive playsets, nor other Mario-themed sets, included what many older Nintendo and Lego fans really wanted: A minifigure version of Mario. That changes in 2027.

First official Lego Mario minifigure

We don’t know much about what to expect in 2027, but Nintendo and Lego’s teaser today confirms that, at the very least, fans will finally get an official Lego Mario minifig. That sound you heard was a ton of creators online who make custom Mario minifigs and sell them for far too much screaming in pain.

Looking at the minifig seen in the teaser, it appears to have a completely new head mold and hat piece. This gives me hope that if we get other Super Mario characters in minifig form, like Luigi or Peach, they too will come with custom head molds and accessories. I’m a bit disappointed that Lego seems to be cheaping out and isn’t doing dual-molded legs. Instead, Lego appears to be just printing a black/brown bit on the bottom of Mario’s feet to represent his shoes. That’s fine, I guess, but I hope we get a deluxe version of this figure that includes dual-molded feet with proper shoes.

But look, I can nitpick this figure a bit, but I’m just happy that finally, after the better part of a decade, Lego and Nintendo are giving fans a Mario minifig. And it even sounds like new sets will be arriving in 2027 that will likely be minifig-scale recreations of Mario locations and levels that don’t connect with the interactive theme. This is all good news. Now we just have to wait a year.
