Living the Dream Details Its Major New Features

Nintendo has released a new trailer for Nintendo Switch life simulator Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream that provides a useful recap of the game’s features, reveals some new ones, and explains more about some old ones. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will release worldwide on April 16, 2026.

The new entry in the Tomodachi series follows the Japan-exclusive Tomodachi Collection on the Nintendo DS and Tomodachi Life on the Nintendo 3DS, which got a worldwide release in 2014. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will be the first new Tomodachi game in over a decade. The fandom has been waiting with bated breath for a long time to get a new game, and Living the Dream looks like it will deliver.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Gets an Encouraging Update

A month out from its highly anticipated release date, Nintendo’s latest Tomodachi Life game on the Switch gets an exciting update.

New Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Overview Trailer Expands on Features

The new Living the Dream trailer shows off the game’s core features for anyone new to the franchise as a whole. From making Miis to sharing them with friends, there are a lot of things players can use to make their island the best it can be. At the very end, it also reveals that the demo for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is now available on the Nintendo eShop.

Mechanics Shown in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream – Overview Trailer

  • Mii creation

    • “Get help” step-by-step option and “From scratch” option
    • Face paint to use stamps or drawing to further edit Miis
  • Solving Mii problems
  • Clothing and house customization
  • Relationship building between Miis

    • The player can now manually introduce Miis instead of waiting for them to randomly ask to meet
    • Friendship, marriage and children
  • Shops

    • Item and building customization at Palette House
  • Island customization
  • Happiness level-up gifts
  • Miis living together
  • Local wireless features

    • Mii and custom item sharing

Many of these features are returning ones from previous Tomodachi games, but fans are glad to see them back regardless. The only notable missing past feature is the 3DS game’s Concert Hall, which still hasn’t shown up less than a month before release and has players worried it won’t be in the game at all. Face paint is the big new thing for Mii making, though, and will be a game changer for players looking to include some more fantastical islanders. The 2021 Switch port of Miitopia had a similar feature with the Makeup system, but the ability to outright draw on a Mii’s face instead of strategically overlaying different features will make it easier than ever to create a Mii accurate to the player’s imagination.

Beyond Miis, Living the Dream will no doubt be the most customizable Tomodachi game yet. The first two titles didn’t have island customization, but it makes sense to add it after how well the feature did in fellow Nintendo life sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Palette House will give the player an amount of control unprecedented for the Tomodachi series before this point – even Animal Crossing never let you make custom food items.

The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 have been great consoles for cozy game lovers. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a mainstream phenomenon back in 2020, and has gotten significant updates as recently as January of this year. Stardew Valley kicked off a renaissance of farming simulators. And just this month, Pokemon Pokopia was such a pleasant surprise to Pokemon fans that the combat-free town-builder quickly rose to become the best-rated Pokemon game of all time. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will be joining a library of cozy titans, but everything shown off so far has left fans reassured that it will be able to stand on its own.
