Living the Dream Gets an Encouraging Update

Nintendo’s upcoming game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has received a noteworthy update just ahead of its release. First announced at a Nintendo Direct in March 2025, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sees the Tomodachi Life franchise return for the first time since the 2014 game that was released for the Nintendo 3DS. Heading to the Nintendo Switch in April, Living the Dream will likely serve as one of the final major first-party Switch games in the wake of the Nintendo Switch 2’s release.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream’s announcement last year generated plenty of excitement, so much so that the Twitter post announcing its release received more likes than the tweet announcing the Nintendo Switch 2. This new Tomodachi Life game also addressed one of the biggest controversies of its previous installment by adding same-sex relationships. Living the Dream now arrives on the heels of another successful life simulation game from Nintendo, with the recently released Pokemon Pokopia seeing some huge early success on the Switch 2.

No, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Isn’t Just “Animal Crossing With Miis”

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is Nintendo’s next big life simulator, but what distinguishes it from its older brother Animal Crossing?

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Officially Rated by the ESRB, Tomodachi Quest May Return

A little over a month out from its highly anticipated April 16 release date, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has been rated by the ESRB. Much like its 3DS counterpart, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has unsurprisingly been rated E for Everyone. Its rating description also notes that it features “comic mischief” and “mild fantasy violence.” The ESRB also released a rating summary that provides additional context for the game, specifically outlining its simulation elements and the objectives players will be expected to complete.

Beyond describing the game’s general nature, the ESRB’s rating summary lists more specific details and moments featured in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. The ESRB notes that Living the Dream contains occasional cartoon violence, including pop-up clouds showing character fights and a turn-based encounter with a slime enemy. The ESRB also reports that there will be instances of toilet humor, including flatulence from Mii characters with an accompanying cloud, and a character being quoted as saying, “Ugh! I forgot to think before I sniff.”

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream receiving an E for Everyone rating should not be a huge surprise given that the Tomodachi Life series has generally been known for its cozy atmosphere, which appeals to all ages. Still, the game receiving an ESRB rating is great news for fans who have been anticipating its release, as a rating certification is usually the last major part of a game’s development cycle. Given that Living the Dream has officially been rated, it looks to be smooth sailing from here, and it should now release as planned on April 16 without any further delays or hassles.

Most interestingly, the ESRB description’s mention of turn-based combat with a slime enemy indicates that the Tomodachi Quest mini-game from the previous game will make a return in Living the Dream. Tomodachi Quest was an 8-bit RPG side game featured in the amusement park that served as a loose precursor to 2017’s Miitopia. The return of this mode should add even more depth to a game that’s sure to give fans hours upon hours of content when it releases this April.
