The Lord of the Rings franchise has a new board game, Foes of Middle-earth, on the way from D20 Culture, and the title’s funding target on Kickstarter was reached in only 10 minutes. Foes of Middle-earth is also tearing through the project’s stretch goals while giving fans a chance to revisit the vision of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings as seen in the movies.
Foes of Middle-earth is fully licensed by Warner Bros. Discovery to utilize the Lord of the Rings characters like Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli as they embark on a dungeon-crawler adventure that unfolds in three phases: exploration, mini-boss challenges, and a final boss battle.
The game features a “handcrafted dual-layered” board, as well as miniature figures featuring the game’s heroes, creatures, and a Balrog. There are also 200 cards included with the game that unleash additional dangers, skills, and quests.
Currently, Foes of Middle-earth has passed over $500,000 in funding and it will run on Kickstarter until March 11. However, the franchise hasn’t had as much recent success in the video game realm. A handful of images from Eidos-Montreal’s canceled Lord of the Rings card-based game surfaced earlier this month. Late last year, Amazon canceled its AAA Lord of the Rings MMO as part of larger layoffs in the company’s gaming division.
There has been a report that a new Lord of the Rings video game is in development that will be similar to Hogwart’s Legacy. That has yet to officially be announced, but there are some new LOTR -related books coming later this year that will explore the making of Peter Jackson’s films.
