Magic: The Gathering is getting a new exclusive card, but only a handful of fans will actually get to own it. Wizards of the Coast has been releasing a lot of new sets for its TCG ever since Universes Beyond went from Eternal-only products to Standard-legal, with each year featuring six or more sets with a 50/50 split between in-multiverse and UB. There are exceptions, such as this year, where the split was not exactly equal, as the schedule comprises three in-multiverse sets and four UB sets. Not all Magic: The Gathering fans are happy about it, but next year has one interesting fix for this.

Still, each UB set typically has scalping or availability issues due to the hype surrounding the respective IP’s collaboration with MTG. This can be a problem, especially when some rare, valuable cards are involved. A good example of this is how Magic: The Gathering will introduce a new card type with Star Trek that’s only available in Collector Boosters in limited quantities, making each of these cards unique. These may then sell for eye-watering amounts on the secondary market. Yet, there is a confirmed new Marvel card coming this December that won’t be available to all players despite being technically free.

Magic: The Gathering Adds a Virtually Unobtainable Card in December 2026

As announced by the official Regal Cinemas account on Twitter, an exclusive Magic: The Gathering card dedicated to Doctor Doom, King of Latveria, from the Marvel Super Heroes set will be distributed to movie-goers for Avengers: Doomsday. There are a few issues with the card’s distribution, though, and Wizards of the Coast hasn’t confirmed any plans to change things. The card is US-only, for starters, and the distribution is only planned for the opening weekend of the movie and while supplies last. Despite the goodwill that MTG‘s new original Marvel set in 2027 may build, titled Darkhold Destiny, this distribution will inevitably leave many players behind, and they will never get a chance to own this special card.

  • The exclusive Doctor Doom, King of Latveria card is only available at Regal Cinemas in the US.
  • The distribution only applies to Infinity Vision screenings.
  • The card will only be available from December 17 to December 20 and while supplies last.
  • To get the card, fans must be Regal Crown Club members or part of the Regal Rewards program and purchase a ticket for a showtime matching the other criteria.

Wizards of the Coast’s collaboration with Marvel is not going to stop any time soon. In fact, a new Magic: The Gathering Marvel Secret Lair drop has been announced, and it’s coming shortly after yet another crossover with the comic book company that added Marvel Zombies to Secret Lair’s catalog. However, this limited distribution of the new Doctor Doom card will inevitably leave some fans unhappy, and the card may even be sold online after the event for ridiculous prices due to its very limited availability. At this time, no other distributions for the card have been announced for the rest of the world, and they don’t seem likely to ever come.

WotC is also making big changes to the game’s booster packs. There will be god packs in Magic: The Gathering in 2027, featuring only Rares and Mythics as well as special treatments and foil cards. However, this will come at a cost, as some card slots are being cut or changed.

In the meantime, Secret Lair is getting even more new official Magic: The Gathering releases in 2026. This is not limited to crossovers, but it shows a more FOMO-adjacent approach to new cards on WotC’s side.
