Magic: The Gathering‘s new Reality Fracture set is bringing back a classic OP card from 2007. The new and very hyped Magic: The Gathering set called Reality Fracture will be released in just a few days, and it’s already a hit among fans due to a mix of nostalgia, interest in new and powerful cards, and curiosity about how the story of Jace will pan out. In Reality Fracture, longtime face of Magic: The Gathering, the Blue planeswalker Jace Beleren, becomes a villain with a plan to make a new multiverse at the price of destroying the existing one.
Despite the hype surrounding the set, or perhaps because of it, Magic: The Gathering‘s Reality Fracture will be affected by delays in several regions, including North America, Latin America, Europe, and Japan. Some products’ availability will be impacted, and Wizards of the Coast cannot guarantee that everything coming with Reality Fracture will be readily and easily accessible to all fans at launch. With the set slated for release in early October, many stores and websites may be impacted.
Magic: The Gathering’s Tarmogoyf is Officially Making a Comeback
First released in May 2007’s Future Sight, the iconic Tarmogoyf is now coming back with Reality Fracture as a Standard-legal Mythic card. The last time Tarmogoyf was playable in Standard was until October 2008, when Shards of Alara came out and led to the card being rotated out of the meta. Tarmogoyf is a 1 generic, 1 Green creature whose power is equal to the number of card types in all graveyards, and its toughness is that same number plus one. It was very popular back then due to the rise of Golgari decks alongside cards like Thoughtseize, Dark Confidant, and Profane Command, as well as various other decks that could get cards into graveyards quickly, such as ramp decks or the Magic: The Gathering Merfolk deck that became popular in 2027.

Tarmogoyf could easily become a powerful creature at the time, and it dominated the meta for as long as it was in it. Now, Magic: The Gathering‘s Reality Fracture is bringing back Displacer Kitten, planeswalkers, and other powerful cards from the game’s past as new versions imagined by Jace in his new multiverse, but Tarmogoyf stays the same. This is a good thing, making the iconic card usable once again, but the current state of the game is very different from what it was almost 20 years ago. With more power creep in modern cards, it’s unlikely that Tarmogoyf will be as powerful and dominant as it was back then, especially with cheap targeted removals like Deathmark, Deadly Precision, and Tragic Trajectory, and counterspells like Spell Snare and Get Out all being very common in the meta.
Still, the card may be very good in Pioneer or maybe other formats, and since it’s yet another powerful and valuable Mythic, it may raise the value of Reality Fracture boosters for Magic: The Gathering fans. At its core, Tarmogoyf is still incredibly strong, even if its power has waned a bit in the modern era of the game.
For those who are excited for even more products outside of Reality Fracture, a new leak reveals a Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man Commander deck that may be coming soon. This is rumored to be a special holiday release, so fans may have to wait a few more weeks to get it.
