One of Blizzard’s most recognizable franchises could be heading in a surprising new direction, with Nexon reportedly negotiating for the rights to develop future StarCraft games. If another company takes a major role in the future of StarCraft, it would mark a significant shift for one of Blizzard’s defining franchises and could significantly change what fans should expect from the franchise’s next major entry.
StarCraft has been largely dormant as a game series for more than a decade, despite fan pleas for more. The franchise remains especially important in South Korea, where the original game still maintains a strong presence in PC cafés nearly three decades after its release. That enduring popularity makes Nexon a particularly interesting company to potentially take on a future StarCraft game.
Nexon Reportedly in Talks for StarCraft Development Rights
According to a report from South Korean outlet Chosun, Nexon is pursuing an agreement with Blizzard that could give it development rights for new content using the StarCraft IP. One industry source reportedly claimed that the negotiations are nearing completion and could include the rights to develop a successor to the existing series. That naturally raises the possibility of StarCraft 3, although no game with that name has been announced and the genre of any potential project remains unclear. Other Korean reporting has been more cautious, claiming discussions are still at an early stage and that details such as development responsibilities and service structure have not yet been finalized.

The potential deal would not be the first time Blizzard and Nexon have worked closely together. Earlier in 2026, the companies announced a partnership that put Nexon in charge of publishing and operating the PC version of Overwatch in South Korea. That arrangement still leaves Blizzard responsible for the game itself, making it considerably different from totally handing Nexon development rights for a new StarCraft project. Reports of a deeper partnership involving Blizzard Entertainment and StarCraft have also circulated previously, suggesting the latest negotiations may be the next step in an existing relationship rather than a sudden change in direction.
Even if Nexon ultimately receives the right to develop a sequel, fans should not assume that means a traditional StarCraft 3 RTS is guaranteed. Recent StarCraft reports have repeatedly connected it with projects outside its original genre, while the newest claims do not specify what type of game Nexon would actually make. That uncertainty could become one of the biggest points of debate surrounding a potential StarCraft revival. Allowing another developer to work with the universe could finally bring the franchise back after years of inactivity, but it could also result in a very different kind of game from what longtime fans expect.
The timing of the report also makes the situation even more interesting, with BlizzCon 2026 approaching on September 12 and 13. As of now, Blizzard has not confirmed that it will announce a StarCraft project at the event, and there is no guarantee any Nexon agreement will be ready to announce by then. Even so, the prospect of another company developing a successor would be one of the biggest changes in the franchise’s history, even if Blizzard and Microsoft retain ownership. Regardless of the circumstances, however, serious discussions appear to be underway about putting StarCraft back into active development after a ten-year hiatus.
