Majora’s Mask Remake Look More Likely After Ocarina of Time

Majora’s Mask Remake Look More Likely After Ocarina of Time

If given the choice between The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask as the Zelda game to get remade, I’d still choose Ocarina of Time in a heartbeat. It’s obviously one of the greatest games ever made, and it is even technically the highest-rated video game of all time depending on the review score aggregate site you’re looking at. For me personally, though, it represents one of the reasons I fell in love with The Legend of Zelda in the first place, and I know I’m not alone in that. However, Majora’s Mask is nonetheless the game I’d choose next, as it is yet another Zelda entry that I have very fond memories of, and I believe that it would absolutely be better if it were developed for current-gen Nintendo hardware. Well, all signs seem to be pointing to that actually happening after recent developments.

Let me be up front and say this is pure speculation here, as Nintendo hasn’t confirmed yet whether Majora’s Mask is being remade for the Switch 2. That much should be clear in the “look more likely” portion of my headline. Even so, I believe this is worth mentioning because Nintendo has been up to quite a bit of Majora’s Mask-specific stuff recently that is rather peculiarly timed. Of course, we are in the middle of The Legend of Zelda‘s 40th anniversary celebration, but it seems awfully odd for Nintendo to be focusing specifically on Majora’s Mask in a number of ways when the Ocarina of Time remake is right around the corner. Specifically, with the Majora’s Mask soundtrack recently added to Nintendo Music, Majora’s Mask cards added to Nintendo Today!, and new NSO profile icons now available, it sure does feel like Nintendo is gearing up for something big very soon—hopefully, a Majora’s Mask remake.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Already Has a Fix for Its Worst Dungeon, and It’s Not the Water Temple

Ocarina of Time Remake may already have the answer to one of the N64 classic’s most frustrating dungeons, and it isn’t the one fans expect.

Nintendo Is Putting Majora’s Mask Everywhere Right Now

For me, this all really started on October 4, when Nintendo began rolling out a Majora’s Mask pack for the Zelda collectible cards available through Nintendo Today!. The cards themselves aren’t new, as Nintendo launched the larger Zelda collection through the app back on September 9, but Majora’s Mask is also only the second game to get its own dedicated pack after Breath of the Wild. Beginning October 4, one new Majora’s Mask card started being delivered each day, with characters from the game getting the spotlight and a quiz attached to each card. Answering those quizzes correctly earns medals that can then be exchanged for missed cards or wallpapers, so Nintendo clearly isn’t just putting Majora’s Mask artwork in the app and then calling it a day. It’s effectively keeping it in front of players every day.

But then, October 4 was also when Majora’s Mask profile icon parts returned through Nintendo Switch Online’s Missions and Rewards program, where they’ll remain available until October 22 in North America. These aren’t brand-new icons, which is worth pointing out, but bringing them back on the very same day the Nintendo Today! pack started certainly adds to the timing of all this. Then, on October 5, Nintendo grouped both of those things together in an official anniversary update and confirmed that Majora’s Mask would be the next Zelda soundtrack added to Nintendo Music on October 9.

It seems awfully odd for Nintendo to be focusing specifically on Majora’s Mask in a number of ways when the Ocarina of Time remake is right around the corner.

So, with all that, within the span of less than a week, Nintendo will have started a daily Majora’s Mask card rollout, brought its NSO profile icons back, and added the game’s soundtrack to Nintendo Music. Again, maybe that’s all just Nintendo celebrating The Legend of Zelda‘s 40th anniversary, but with the Ocarina of Time remake launching on November 5, I can’t help but find it awfully interesting that Majora’s Mask is suddenly getting this much attention all at once.

Majora’s Mask Would Just Make Sense After Ocarina of Time

Maybe I’m just being hopeful—maybe I’m even being too hopeful—but it would make way too much sense for Nintendo to remake Majora’s Mask after Ocarina of Time. Majora’s Mask is, after all, the direct sequel to one of the most beloved video games ever made, and while it has always been a little more niche by comparison, it has built up an incredibly devoted following of its own over the years. In fact, I think a big part of what makes Majora’s Mask so memorable is how different it is from Ocarina of Time, despite coming directly after it. It’s darker and far more unsettling, but that’s exactly why it has managed to stand on its own for so long rather than simply being remembered as the game that came after Ocarina of Time.

That’s why, if the Ocarina of Time remake does well, I can’t imagine there being a much more obvious Zelda game for Nintendo to tackle next. Nintendo would already have reminded an entirely new generation of players why Ocarina of Time matters, and Majora’s Mask would be sitting right there as the next chapter in that version of Link’s story. Maybe all of this recent attention really is just part of the 40th anniversary celebration, and that’s where I’m keeping my expectations for now. But if Nintendo is looking for a way to follow up one of the most anticipated remakes it has ever made, Majora’s Mask almost feels too obvious to pass up. And now, it just seems like the evidence is stacking up that the developer may very well be taking advantage of that opportunity.
