Marathon Director Says Bungie Has ‘Years-Long’ Story Plans

Marathon Director Says Bungie Has ‘Years-Long’ Story Plans

In discussing Bungie’s approach to Marathon as a live service game, creative director Julia Nardin reveals the long-term plans for the game’s narrative. Similarly to Bungie’s other live-service game, Destiny 2, Marathon will continue to evolve over time, both with new features and content. The game’s narrative is also one that will continue to open up over new seasons, and it looks like that won’t be stopping anytime soon.

As part of Bungie’s process to continue improving Marathon and pleasing fans, the studio has released plenty of updates, fixing issues and smoothing out rough patches. Not only that, Bungie has experimented with new features, many of which have been highly requested by the community, such as a dedicated Duos mode for Marathon. There’s more on the way as well, with Bungie recently commenting on some of the most requested fixes and changes, including an adjustment for the potential for grenade spam, an issue that typically happens during firefights as players launch their throwables in a way to gain the upper hand. In addition to gameplay changes, Bungie also has plans to continue growing the game’s narrative.

Marathon Addresses Player Feedback and Reveals Upcoming Game Adjustments

Bungie digs into player feedback for Marathon, revealing some of the top concerns as well as how it will be fixing things in the future.

Bungie Has Long-Term Plans for Marathon’s Story

In a recent interview, Marathon creative director Julia Nardin admitted that Bungie has plans to continue evolving the game’s story over the next few years. However, she went on to reaffirm that it isn’t completely locked in place either, as it’s equally important that the players also have a say in shaping where things go as well, considering Marathon is a live-service game, so it’s intentional to grow with players. For Bungie, each new season represents a new entry point for players, not just due to Marathon wiping player progress, but from a story perspective as well.

Despite keeping the door open slightly for narrative changes, Nardin did confirm that certain elements are completely locked. Essentially, Marathon‘s story of Tau Ceti prior to the player’s arrival is set in stone, as players will uncover bits and pieces by completing faction contracts and collecting specific items during gameplay. Bungie also has plans to add more clues and collectibles over time to flesh out the world and backstory even more.

The reassurances are likely in response to the continued narrative surrounding Marathon‘s fluctuating player count, especially on Steam where the numbers can easily be seen. While Bungie has no plans to abandon the game, many players are worried about the near-term future, especially as Marathon‘s player count has seemingly dropped, even with a positive reception from critics and players alike. While Bungie may want to keep the ball rolling for as long as possible, if the game continues to lose players, it serves to wonder whether Sony will choose to pull the plug.

Ultimately, the news shouldn’t be too surprising from Bungie’s perspective, as the studio has confirmed that it’ll be supporting Marathon for the long haul. In addition to the reassurance of years of support and long-term adjustments, fans should also expect to see seasons’ worth of content as well. In fact, prior to Marathon‘s release, Bungie gave fans an early look at not only what to expect in Season 1, but some big features coming in June once the second season arrives. Known as Nightfall, Marathon plans to add a new feature called the Cradle, which will give players the ability to further refine and customize their runner shells.
