It seems Destiny 2 fans are taking their frustrations out on Marathon as the Steam version of the game has seen a massive uptick in recent negative reviews. Bungie is in a very tough spot as the studio just announced the final update for Destiny 2, essentially bringing the series to an end, at least for the time being. In addition, the studio continues to work on elevating Marathon, with Season 2 on the horizon.
May 21 certainly served as a bittersweet day for Bungie fans as the studio ended a lengthy period of silence regarding the future of Destiny 2. After missing its major March update, Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 is getting its final live-service content update on June 9, 2026. While the content is stuffed with new things to do, highly-requested features, and other big changes, the news has left most Destiny 2 fans feeling conflicted as it also means that the long-running game is reaching its end point. Although it will still be running long after the final update, there’s currently nothing on the horizon to look forward to as Destiny 2 was for the original game, and this fact has seemingly caused some to lash out at Marathon.

Bungie releases a new update for Marathon, increasing runner and faction XP gains, a new enemy to fight, as well as brand-new encounters.
Marathon Is Being Review Bombed By Destiny 2 Fans
Following Bungie’s big Destiny 2 announcement, the Steam page for Marathon has seen a big uptick in negative reviews after largely stabilizing over the past couple of months. After it launched in March, Marathon saw a first round of review bombing, though in that case, it was more gameplay and technical focused. This time, it’s pretty clear as to why the game is being review bombed, as many comments reference Destiny 2 in some capacity, with frequent comments questioning why this game exists, Destiny 2 being sacrificed or killed to make Marathon happen, while others appear bitter that development went into this game instead of a Destiny 3.

While the recent review status is still “Mostly Positive” at the time of publication, the negative reviews have spiked in the past 24 hours since Bungie’s major Destiny 2 announcement. Still, some people have recognized this as a possibility and are attempting to negate the negative reviews by adding their own positive comment, urging potential consumers to ignore the recent negative reviews and posts.
For now, Bungie appears to have big plans for the future of Marathon, as it becomes the sole active game at the studio. Game director Joe Ziegler outlined these plans in a massive update post, stating what the team has learned since launch, what is being worked on, and then a lengthier look into what is coming to Marathon over the next few seasons. Surprisingly, Ziegler confirmed that Season 2 will also see two different PvE modes being added as experimental playlists, one that has only a light touch of PvP elements, while the other will be a pure PvE game mode.

It’s fair to wonder about the long term health of Bungie as well at this point. Even though Bungie has confirmed new games are being incubated, recent reports from individuals like Jason Schreier indicated that the studio isn’t working on Destiny 3 and will be seeing significant layoffs sometime in June once the final update has launched. Schreier also mentioned that new Destiny-related pitches and prototypes are being submitted but at this time, nothing has been greenlit.
