Mario Kart World Just Broke a 17-Year-Old Record

Mario Kart World Just Broke a 17-Year-Old Record

After 17 years of holding the record of fastest-selling Mario Kart game in Japan, Mario Kart Wii has finally been dethroned by Mario Kart World, which managed to sell over 2.5 million copies within 29 weeks. Mario Kart World is the latest entry in the beloved Mario Kart franchise, and despite early criticism for major changes to the Grand Prix mode, the inclusion of a new Free Roam mode and expanded gameplay mechanics have helped to draw enough interest in the latest Nintendo racing game and push it to the top of the podium.

Gamers were first introduced to the Mario Kart game franchise with the release of Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992. The series would go on to become one of the most popular video game franchises of all time, with beloved entries like Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GameCube, Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch. Players had to wait over a decade between Mario Kart 8‘s original release on the Wii U and the launch of Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2, so it should not be surprising that fans have been enthusiastically jumping in to try out the latest offering in the iconic series. That said, the speed with which Mario Kart World has begun to cement its legacy in the franchise’s history has managed to raise more than a few unsuspecting eyebrows.

Nintendo Switch 2 Has Broken Yet Another Record

The Nintendo Switch 2 breaks yet another major record, marking a key milestone within the first month of the new gaming console’s launch.

Mario Kart World is Officially the Fastest-Selling Mario Kart Game…in Japan

First spotted by Twitter (X) user Pierre485, Mario Kart World surpassed 2.5 million sales across Japanese retail markets within 29 weeks from its initial launch, making it not only the fastest-selling Mario Kart game but the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch 2 game in Japan. The previous record for fastest-selling Mario Kart game in Japan was held by Mario Kart Wii, which released in April 2008, though it took that game 89 weeks to reach the 2.5 million sales marker. Pierre485’s data research also shows that Mario Kart World was the best-selling game of 2025 in Japan, with only one week remaining in the year, meaning it is highly unlikely any other game will be taking Mario Kart World’s Japanese sales title.

Many are curious to know the full logistical breakdown, namely what percentage of Japanese sales of Mario Kart World are a result of the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle versus standalone game purchases. It has been estimated by Pierre485 that, as of September 2025, approximately 84% of global Mario Kart World units were shipped via bundles, though audiences will want to await official data shared by Nintendo for a more accurate look at the sales performance of both Mario Kart World and the Nintendo Switch 2. Regardless, the fact that Mario Kart World has managed to surpass a 17-year-long record held by a game for the Wii, one of the best-selling consoles of all time, is certainly a testament to the early success of the Switch 2.

Whether the latest update for Mario Kart World will further encourage fans to pick up the racing game remains to be seen, and it is not known if the data shared by Pierre485 is wholly inclusive of additional sales from holiday offerings. Interested fans will likely need to wait until the New Year to see any official sales reports from Nintendo, which should include both more accurate data and a better insight into how Mario Kart World fared globally. As it stands, the performance of Mario Kart World in Japanese markets alone has already made history, leaving analysts and fans alike tentatively waiting to see how the newest Nintendo racing game will fare in the long run and if any more records are waiting to be broken.
