Developer NetEase has just announced that there will be stricter penalties for those who leave matches early in Marvel Rivals. These stricter penalties will also affect inactive players and those who deliberately try to throw a match in Marvel Rivals.
Marvel Rivals is about to hit its second birthday, and by most accounts, the game has only gotten exponentially better since its December 2024 launch. 21 new heroes have been added to Marvel Rivals since launch, as have a plethora of new maps and modes, and NetEase is still supporting the game consistently with balance updates and seasonal content drops. But there’s one major element of the gameplay experience that long-time fans think could still use some work, and that’s how Marvel Rivals handles players who violate the hero shooter’s rules.

In a blog post on the official Marvel Rivals website, developer NetEase announced that there will now be stricter penalties for those who violate Marvel Rivals‘ matchmaking rules. The post begins with an explanation of why these rules are important, stating that “being inactive, throwing, or leaving a match early not only disrupts the normal flow of the game, but also places an unfair, heavy burden on teammates who are still fighting hard to win.” To better ensure a positive gameplay experience for these dedicated players, NetEase has decided to implement new deterrents.

The important takeaway from NetEase’s most recent announcement is that the severity of penalties for being inactive, throwing, and leaving matches is increasing across the board. If a player is reported for any of these behaviors more than once, the severity of the penalty will be increased in response, resulting in longer gameplay suspensions. Developer NetEase also states that “recurring behaviors that persistently ruin the gameplay experience” will result in “even stricter” disciplinary measures. NetEase doesn’t detail what these disciplinary measures or harsher penalties will be exactly, but it seems offending players will now receive more than the standard 15-minute ban.
Additionally, NetEase has announced that Quick Match will now use its own independent penalty tier, one that adopts this stricter system. The developer explains that Quick Match relies on teamwork just as much as Marvel Rivals‘ Arcade Mode, and as such, leaving a match early or deliberately throwing the game affects the player’s experience just as much as in any other mode.
NetEase ends its blog post with an admittance that real-world circumstances can lead to an accidental loss of connection. If players experience a hardware crash or network issue that forces them to leave a match, they’re advised to speak with NetEase customer support so that the issue can be verified and the resulting penalty can be removed from their account.
