Marvel’s Wolverine is Officially the End of an Era

Marvel’s Wolverine is the end of an era for Insomniac Games, bringing the studio’s extremely impressive hot streak to an end. Marvel’s Wolverine is the latest game from Insomniac, the studio best known for titles like the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy, the Ratchet & Clank franchise, and of course, the Spider-Man PlayStation games.

Insomniac’s 2018 Spider-Man was a critical and commercial hit, and it was followed by one critically-acclaimed game after another. The 2019 Stormland VR game earned strong reviews from critics, as did Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. On the PS5 especially, Insomniac has been untouchable, and one of Sony’s most consistent studios when it comes to new game releases. Unfortunately, Insomniac’s hot streak is now at an end thanks to Marvel’s Wolverine.

Marvel Boss Implies Insomniac Will Develop More Superhero Games After Wolverine

It looks like Insomniac will continue to develop more superhero games after Marvel’s Wolverine, according to a recent comment from Marvel Games boss.

Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac’s Lowest-Rated Game on PS5

Marvel’s Wolverine marks the end of an era for Insomniac because even though its overall review score certainly isn’t bad, it’s still the lowest that a game from the studio has received on the PS5. In fact, it is the first PS5 game from Insomniac to score lower than 80 on Metacritic (it has a 78 at the time of this writing). Insomniac’s other PS5 games have earned 85 (Miles Morales), 90 (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), and 88 (Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart). This doesn’t mean that Wolverine is a bad game, but it does mean that the consensus on it is that it doesn’t live up to the expectations set by the studio’s other work on the PS5, marking the end of an era.

Marvel’s Wolverine reviews have criticized it for its linearity and hand-holdy nature. Many reviews have offered mixed opinions on the game’s story, with some saying that it’s yet another high-quality narrative from Insomniac and others coming away disappointed. Wolverine‘s combat has also seen a mixed response, with some feeling like it does the iconic character justice and others feeling underwhelmed. Whatever the case may be, it’s definitely disappointing that Wolverine didn’t score as high as Insomniac’s other games, and it will be interesting to see how the next game from the studio is received.

It should be noted that while Wolverine‘s 78 makes it the lowest-rated Insomniac game on PS5, it isn’t the lowest-rated game from the studio. Titles like Fuse, Song of the Deep, and Edge of Nowhere all scored lower and Insomniac was ultimately able to bounce back with some of its most beloved games afterward. Sony acquired Insomniac in part because of its confidence in the studio to deliver incredible games, and while Wolverine isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, chances are future Insomniac titles will be much better-received.

If the leaks are accurate, fans already know what’s next from Insomniac. Insomniac’s next game is believed to be a Venom video game that will supposedly launch at some point in 2027. Venom is expected to be around the same size as the Miles Morales game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is believed to be the studio’s next full-scale project, while X-Men and Ratchet & Clank titles are also apparently waiting in the wings. Wolverine‘s lower-than-expected review scores may mark a rare misstep from Insomniac, but the studio’s best days could very well still be ahead of it.
