Marvel’s Wolverine has just had its Early Access release, but just before that, developer Insomniac Games made a last-minute tweak to the game. The Day 1 Patch has already launched, and was available during our review period, but this latest change, while small in the grand scheme of things, addresses one of the community’s criticisms of the game, specifically with Wolverine’s design.
This Marvel’s Wolverine update does not significantly change the game by any means, but it does make a tweak to the iconic X-Men character’s look. Previously, Wolverine/Logan had his signature mutton chops for facial hair, but fans noticed that it didn’t match some of the earlier designs, where Wolverine had more of a full beard. Now this last-minute update to Marvel’s Wolverine gives the character a lot more scruff on the chin.
While it may seem like a small quibble in the grand scheme of things, some were critical of Wolverine’s look not matching the earlier marketing material for the game. In that first teaser trailer and some of the later footage, Wolverine had more of a beard, which stood out when wearing his classic mask. However, as the game neared launch, Wolverine’s look somewhat changed to leave his chin more clean-shaven and to give the character a mutton-chop facial hair style. In fact, during our time with the game during review, Wolverine had that mutton chop look, and even after downloading the Day 1 patch, that design stayed the same.
Obviously, a bit of facial hair would not have swayed review scores one way or another, but it does show that Insomniac Games is not done tweaking their game. Marvel’s Wolverine came in with a lower overall review score than many had expected, and there was a wide range of criticisms, from the simplicity of the combat to the hand-holding present in an already-linear experience. Whether those elements might be addressed in future updates is unclear, but I would, at the very least, expect Insomniac to add some new content to the game.
There’s room for new Nightmare Trials to further challenge players through traversal and combat. And, if Marvel’s Spider-Man is any indication, there should be copious additional Wolverine suits added to the game over time.
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
Coincidentally, some of the Wolverine suits that are currently in the game already make tweaks to Logan’s facial hair based on the design. There is a surprisingly diverse selection of looks for the X-Men character, from Old Man Logan to Age of Apocalype Wolverine and even two animation style suits, one based on the classic X-Men animated series and another based on Marvel’s Tokon Fighting Souls. So, no matter how you feel about Wolverine’s facial hair pre or post-patch, there are numerous options to further personalize the look of your hero in the game.
