Meccha Chameleon took over the internet earlier this summer, as the Japanese indie game built around painting yourself to hide in your environment became a massive hit with streamers around the world. Its cheap price and ability to create custom maps also allowed for it to feel never-ending in its variety, enough to generate endless clips and continue creating excitement as it catapulted to over 20 million units sold in its first 2 months. With such success, why stop at video games?
The simple concept of painting yourself to hide and avoid being caught by opponents has always been the central appeal of the game, with your generic avatar like a human canvas that’s simultaneously easy to recognize but also surprisingly difficult to find if painted and hidden well. It got to the point that people were even recreating the little figures and placing them in the real world. This proposed new event takes that concept and transforms it into a communal experience to enjoy with others.

The free event will take place in the One Fukuoka Building in Fukuoka, Japan on September 23rd, using the 6th-floor Sky Lobby as a location where you can paint your own figure and hide it in the environment for others to find. To ensure the event is age-appropriate for younger fans, the event is encouraging young people to compete with their parents, something required for elementary school or younger participants, though adults can participate alone if they wish. To make things more exciting, the event is also collaborating with brands like arcade chain Round1 to have themed “stages” that create variety to the hiding locations.
The event is being organized in partnership with a group called Bloomin’ Kids, which seeks to make creating art fun, innovative, and collaborative for younger kids. In that respect, the concept of taking the Prop Hunt-esque hide-and-seek nature of the original game and bringing it into the real world delivers that in an engaging and exciting way by letting people share the experience with others. Who knows, maybe the event’s success will also translate into future events in other locations as well. The game sure is successful enough to give it a try, at least.
