Metro 2039 Confirms Popular Feature for Launch

Metro 2039 has confirmed the return of its popular Karma system, though the upcoming game will take a different approach to morality to fit the story better. Metro 2039 is the highly anticipated sequel to Metro Exodus, and developer 4A Games has already shared some insight into its gameplay and main story.

Initially announced in April, Metro 2039 is the next entry in the series set to release in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In this new chapter, all-new protagonist Stranger has to retire from exile and return to the Moscow Metro, which has been taken over by the Novoreich regime. The leader of the unified faction is known as Hunter, who rules with oppression and propaganda. Stranger must now fight the Novoreich as well as his own personal demons. Similar to previous entries, Metro 2039 will include returning enemies, stealth gameplay, weapon customization, limited resources, and a deep story with political hues. Now, the developers have confirmed that another fan-favorite feature is making a comeback.

Metro 2039 Hands-On Preview: We Are So Back

GameRant goes hands on with Metro 2039, 4A Games’ upcoming entry that brings the series back to its darker, more survival-focused roots.

Metro 2039 Features Karma System, But Steps Away from Moral Ambiguity

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Metro 2039 executive producer Jon Bloch revealed that the series’ Karma system is coming back. However, unlike other Metro games, the approach to morality is going to shift to match the story better. “Where there was kind of a moral grayness in our previous games, we wanted to make sure that the morality was clear in Metro 2039,” explained Bloch. “There is no hope, no future – except the one the Führer is promising to bring in.” The game is going to explore the repercussions of war and take a firmer standpoint against the wrongs of the fascist Novoreich regime.

Bloch reassured that the basis of the Karma system will remain the same in Metro 2039, meaning that players’ actions will have consequences later. The new entry will handle the system slightly differently, though, “because it needs to serve the story.” It is unclear how the Karma system will manifest itself in Metro 2039‘s gameplay, but since the game’s tone is already darker than its predecessors, players’ moral choices may be tougher than ever.

The Metro series has one of the best Karma systems in video games. Depending on fans’ decisions, the main story will have either positive or negative effects. What sets the Metro franchise apart from other titles is how its defining moral choices are not as easy to spot. In Metro Exodus, a faint flash of blue would appear on the screen every time players earned moral points, with the same mechanic present in Metro 2033 and Last Light. However, the games would make it quite hard for fans to notice which decisions led them to each good or bad ending.

It will be interesting to see how Metro 2039‘s Karma system will surprise players once they reach the end of their playthrough. 4A Games will likely unveil more details and trailers on the horror FPS in the coming months. The game has not confirmed an exact release date, but Metro 2039 is expected in February 2027. It is arguably one of next year’s most anticipated titles, but whether it meets fans’ expectations remains to be seen.
