Microsoft Is Bringing Its Gaming Copilot AI Assistant to Xbox Consoles

Microsoft Is Bringing Its Gaming Copilot AI Assistant to Xbox Consoles

Microsoft has confirmed that it will be bringing the Gaming Copilot AI assistant to current-gen Xbox consoles later in 2026. The Gaming Copilot AI assistant coming to Xbox consoles is currently available as a beta feature for users to try out on PCs, mobile devices, and the Asus ROG Xbox Ally handheld.

The news came after the filing of a patent by Microsoft for AI that can play games on the player’s behalf when asked. This patent, called “state management for video game help sessions,” would give the AI a snapshot of a player’s progress and offer some help if repeated failures are detected. Once the task is done, control will be handed back to the player. Although the practice is similar to handing someone a controller in person and having them do the work, the patent stated that even an AI-based player could answer the call for help.

Xbox’s Helix Console Could Cost At Least $1000, But Will Be Significantly More Powerful Than Series X

The next-gen Xbox Project Helix console could set back users at least a grand, but may be a larger jump in performance from the current generation.

Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot AI Will Arrive on Xbox Series X/S Later This Year

With AI becoming more prominent in gaming today, Microsoft stated that it is moving forward with bringing its Copilot AI assistant to more platforms. Xbox product manager for gaming AI, Sonali Yadav, stated during a GDC Festival of Gaming panel that Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot AI assistant would arrive on Xbox Series X/S consoles later in 2026. After revealing this, Yadav said, “We will continue to bring it to more services that players are playing.” The announcement was made nearly a year after Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot was first introduced for public use. The service can be accessed by pressing the Windows Key + G to open the Game Bar on Windows PCs or by holding the Library button on the Xbox ROG Ally system.

When prompted, players can use voice commands to ask Gaming Copilot for suggestions if they get stuck in a game. They can also ask the AI assistant for recommendations on what to play from their game library, inquire about their play history, or remind them when their Xbox Game Pass subscription will be renewed. The Gaming Copilot AI will likely arrive as part of an Xbox console feature update, though no exact date was given. Microsoft’s mainline Copilot AI assistant is available on Windows 11 and as a dedicated mobile app. Though Copilot can be accessed with a free account, access to some of Copilot’s premium features requires a monthly subscription starting at $9.99 per month. Given that Gaming Copilot is currently a free feature on supported devices, it is possible that this will continue to be the case once the AI assistant arrives on Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Microsoft’s AI Integration Remains Divisive

The pending arrival of Gaming Copilot AI on Xbox consoles comes at a hectic time for Microsoft. Following the retirement of former Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s CoreAI president Asha Sharma was promoted to Spencer’s old role. Despite the rise of generative AI in game development, Sharma stated that AI will be a tool for Xbox developers to use and will not be used to replace artists. Sharma said that Xbox is “committed to art made by people” and that no mandate on AI usage has been implemented.

With Gaming Copilot being brought to Xbox Series X/S consoles, it is possible that the AI assistant could also be integrated into Xbox’s Project Helix console. As it stands, Project Helix is confirmed to use AI-based upscaling technology from AMD to render and optimize graphics for various games. However, it remains to be seen if Project Helix’s AI-based technologies will extend to other uses.
