Microsoft Shoots Down “Blank Check” Rumor About Next Xbox

Earlier this week, newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that development on the console’s next generation had begun, tentatively titled Project Helix. The announcement was light on specifics. Around the same time, Sharma held an internal town hall with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. A popular rumor mill claimed that Nadella had given Sharma a “blank check” for the project. A representative of Microsoft intervened, saying that no, no she does not.

““Asha Sharma has my full trust and has A BLANK CHECK to revive Xbox and the trust of the fans no matter the cost” was not said,” posted Chief Communications Officer Frank Shaw.

The response was prompted by eXtas1s, a YouTuber who dedicated an 18 minute video to the town hall and the situation stirring at Xbox. Shaw singled out just one particular detail, cutting the cord on a potential broken telephone that Microsoft was giving Sharma all resources necessary to revive the Xbox brand.

It is an odd detail to snuff out. The announcement of Project Helix introduced more questions than answers. Xbox games and hardware have not been selling very well, hampered by the “Xbox everywhere” strategy that came out of Game Pass’ initial success. The Helix announcement contained the usual platitudes, only specifying that the new system would play Xbox and PC games. Sharma’s appointment, as well as the departure of previous bosses Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, was incredibly sudden, suggesting a lot of internal turmoil.

Whether Helix is a committed console or another jab at a hybridized service, or how much of Microsoft’s greater AI plans will be involved, is still a mystery. With GDC approaching, it’s possible developers will be looped in, but you can’t shake the feeling that the tarmac is being paved as we land. Amid all this, it’s just kind of funny for Microsoft to be pedantic about a “blank check” comment, as if to say “no, the next Xbox does NOT have unlimited resources, thank you.”

One responder to Shaw’s clarification asked if the Xbox is dead. “Lots of fun ahead!” replied Shaw.
