Midnight’s Hardest Grinds and Expert Solutions on How to Get Past Them

This article was produced in collaboration with our sponsor, Skycoach

The clock has finally struck Midnight in World of Warcraft. The expansion was fully released on March 2, but the fun truly began on March 17 with the start of Season 1, and on March 24 with the opening of Mythic+ dungeons, Nightmare Prey, and Mythic Voidspire and Dreamrift. Now that most of the endgame activities are available, there is no shortage of things to do in World of Warcraft right now.

However, therein lies the problem: with only so many hours in the day, some players are struggling to keep up. While World of Warcraft fans are no stranger to the grind, some of Midnight’s are especially egregious – so much so that demand for professional boosting services from Skycoach is up 15–25% more than typical expansion releases. Something has changed with how some of WoW’s open world content is designed, and it has led more players to seek ways to prevent the MMO from becoming a second job than ever before.

After 6 Years, World of Warcraft’s Haranir Basically Demand a Feature Be Reworked

The Haranir allied race from Midnight prove World of Warcraft needs a major rework to one of its most core and essential features.

Why Players Are Buying 25% More Boosts in WoW: Midnight

WoW’s Endgame Grind Has Players Burning the Midnight Oil

In the world of MMOs, “boosting” is the name given to the professional service where gamers pay a third party to accomplish something for them inside the game. There are boosts available for just about anything, from leveling and grinding reputation to hunting for rare achievements and mount drops. Countless boosting services are available for World of Warcraft, but professional groups like Skycoach are among the most reputable.

Gamers should always be careful when using boosting services, and should always read WoW’s Terms of Service before doing so.

During a typical expansion release for World of Warcraft, it is not uncommon for boosting services to experience a surge of business. With many new rewards to earn, raids to clear, and gear to collect, it is no surprise that many fans turn to boosters to help them out. However, Skycoach has reported a 15–25% surge in service requests in Midnight from what it typically receives during an expansion launch. While one might first assume it is because of surging player count, Skycoach believes it is from a different source: design-heavy bottlenecks.

Take for instance, Abundance. This feature has acolytes enter one of four caves spread throughout the zones of WoW: Midnight and collect orbs from enemies, gathering nodes, and special events to increase their score and earn Unalloyed Abundance. The fast-paced, serotonin-pumping mini-game, combined with the dulcet tones of Darin De Paul as Dundun, Loa of Abundance and narrator for the event, made it a fan-favorite activity after launch. Unfortunately, within a matter of days, Blizzard nerfed many aspects of the activity, transforming it into an unforgiving grind-fest – especially considering Epic profession tools are locked behind it.

Another example is one of the treasures found in Harandar. The Peculiar Cauldron requires fans to loot 150 Crystallized Resin Fragments in order to open it. These items are tough to spot along the river’s edge, and they de-spawn shortly after other players loot them, making it a frustrating feat for World of Warcraft fans to accomplish. This treasure not only rewards the coveted Ruddy Sporeglider mount, but is required for the “Treasures of Harandar” achievement, and by extension the “That’s Aln, Folks!” and “Light Up the Night” meta-achievements.

The Abandoned Ritual Skull treasure in the Zul’Aman of WoW: Midnight, which requires 1,000 Vile Essence (~40% drop rate from Vilebranch mobs in the area), is an even worse grind, but it, at least, only rewards the Hexed Vilefeather Eagle mount, and is no longer required for the “Treasures of Zul’Aman” achievement.

Since the system was introduced, every new WoW expansion has introduced new Renown factions, and Midnight is no exception. Grinding reputation with these factions can be daunting, but the Silvermoon Court is especially complicated. The surprisingly tricky Saltheril’s Soiree activity can be confusing at first glance, making it harder to figure out the best way to raise one’s reputation with WoW’s Silvermoon Court Renown faction as a whole, and the four subfactions: Magisters, Blood Knights, Farstriders, and the Row. That said, Silvermon Court may be the most important Renown to raise, as the Champion gear players can buy from them at Renown Rank 9 is a helm – one of the five pieces of gear that grant Tier set bonuses when upgraded with a Catalyst Charge.

With so many hefty grinds looming over their heads, it is no surprise more fans are opting for boosting services in Midnight. Though detractors of the service might accuse these players of “skipping the fun,” Skycoach instead argues that getting professionals to help with these brutal grinds lets them skip to the fun instead. Regardless of where one stands on boosting, there is one thing all fans can agree on when it comes to over-designed grinds: something’s got to give.

How World of Warcraft Pros Handle the Daily (and Weekly) Grind

Exclusive Tips From Skycoach on Managing Midnight’s Worst Bottlenecks

Luckily, the professional players at Skycoach have offered some expert tips on how to deal with some of the worst grinds in Midnight. Following these pro tips from masters of the grind can help gamers minimize their time in these bottlenecks and maximize their item level and fun, even without buying a WoW boost themselves.

Abundance

In the post-nerf reality of Abundance, players can still make it rain orbs like there’s no tomorrow.

  • Get and use all eight Shards of Dundun every week; there are no catch-up or forgiveness mechanics, and any that aren’t earned one week are lost.
  • Run cooperatively! Join a raid group doing the active Abundance location to ensure 900 Unalloyed Abundance every run, and 7,200 each week.

    • Even post nerf, with orbs shared and contested, triggering back-to-back events in a raid group is far more efficient than going alone.
    • With the right group, gamers can still earn 1–2 million Abundance in a single run, making the 10 million Abundance required for the “Abundance: An Acolyte No Longer” easily earned with a week’s worth of runs.

Crystallized Resin Fragments

Each node in Harandar drops between one and seven Crystallized Resin Fragments, but by following these tips, players can gather all 150 required to open the Peculiar Cauldron in WoW: Midnight in 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Drink an Inky Black potion; not only does this make Harandar look awesome, but the purple outlines of the Crystallized Resin Fragments become much easier to see.

    • Inky Black Potions can be purchased from the Auction House, or from Rona Greenteeth on Darkmoon Island during the Darkmoon Faire, but fans can occasionally find them lying around the Arcantina for free.
  • If others are collecting Crystallized Resin Fragments in the same instance, turn on War Mode, as it is usually less populated. Just watch out for players from the enemy faction!
  • There is a documented Blizzard glitch where if a character has exactly 149 fragments in their inventory, Crystallized Resin Fragments stop showing up in the overworld. If this happens, delete one fragment from the stack (Shift + click to separate) to resolve the bug.

Silvermoon Court Renown

Like all other Renown tracks, the Silvermoon Court is Warband-wide, with 2,500 reputation required for each of its 20 levels. Here are some tricks for raising it as quickly as possible.

  • Saltheril’s Soiree is the single biggest source of Silvermoon Court reputation each week; stopping by the venue, choosing a faction with Favor of the Court, and completing the Fortify the Runestones quest in the Eversong Woods zone of WoW: Midnight, should be a priority after each weekly reset.

    • The chosen Soiree faction is locked in warband-wide until the next week.
    • Always choose one of the factions that grants a bonus Saltheril’s Favor token.
    • Individual factions cannot go below 0 reputation; though balancing them may seem like the play, throwing reputation loss towards factions with no progress essentially waives the penalty.

Raid timing

Mythic Voidspire and Dreamrift are open now, but March on Quel’Danas is finally available on March 31 for all difficulties – and with it, the first chance at getting a complete Tier set bonus.

  • March on Quel’Danas is the only source of the omni-slot tier token.

    • After reset on March 31, seek the right token pieces from raid clears that week, hold their WoW character’s Great Vault choice until after, and hope for a slot that the third raid can fill for a shot at completing a Tier Set bonus the first week.

Dawncrest Management

world-of-warcraft-midnight-game-director-reaffirms-stance-addons Image via Blizzard

With the removal of Valorstones in WoW: Midnight, Dawncrests are the sole upgrade currency fans must worry about.

  • Upgrading an item costs no Dawncrests if they have equipped an item of a higher item level in that slot before.

    • The 6/6 rank of each upgrade tier is equal to the 2/6 rank of the next highest tier; for example, Hero 6/6 and Myth 2/6 are both item level 276.
    • This means upgrading an item to 6/6 on the previous track will make upgrading an item on the next track from 1/6 to 2/6 cost no Dawncrests, effectively giving a free upgrade that would otherwise drain the weekly 100-crest cap.

Dawncrests, Voidlight Marl, Shards of Dundun, and Unalloyed Abundance may be important in World of Warcraft: Midnight, but it is clear that a player’s time has become the ultimate currency in The Worldsoul Saga. Many are more interested in chasing high-prestige activities like Ahead of the Curve, or experiencing Azeroth at a slower pace by questing and leveling alts, than they are slamming their faces against brutal grinds. With luck, future World of Warcraft content won’t have as many daunting bottlenecks all at once – but until then, hopefully these tips and tricks will help gamers get back to whatever part of Azeroth gives them the most enjoyment.
