Those who have played Diablo 4 at least once in their life have probably wondered at least once whether there was an easier way to figure out this entire mess. Without a doubt, the game is full of interesting systems to play around with, but figuring out how to make them work together is an entirely different challenge. What’s more, Diablo 4 has gotten even more complex over the years, and at some point, understanding how everything works starts to feel like homework.
However, as it turns out, creating a meaningful ARPG that actually has depth does not necessarily require you to create a guide that will take people years to figure out. Minecraft Dungeons 2 seems determined to prove this point by deepening its builds, loot, combat, and endgame while simultaneously keeping the game just as approachable as the first one. It appears that Dungeons 2 has found the perfect solution to a problem Diablo 4 has been having since its release in 2023.
Diablo 4’s Complexity Is Both Its Strength and Its Downfall
It’s true that Diablo 4 is not the most difficult game out there. However, its complexity comes from understanding numerous progression systems required for learning how to optimize your builds. Choosing the right skills and finding the right gear simply isn’t enough. Players need to consider too many elements at once, such as all the different affixes, Paragon Boards, Glyphs, and many other sources of power.
Even damage itself is not straightforward, with the different bonuses interacting in ways that could create an insane amount of combinations that are not equally powerful. This complexity might become even more annoying in the endgame, where Diablo 4 requires players to make very specific decisions rather than just chasing bigger numbers. Blizzard has repeatedly reworked these mechanics over the years, and it has even acknowledged that some of them created ”a lot of stat bloat that didn’t make the game more fun.”
What fully illustrates the absurd complexity of the game is the fact that it took the Diablo 4 community three years to solve one of the quests in the game, as reported by Prima Games. At least the game has a way of keeping its players busy for years, which is not something every game can boast about.
Since Diablo 4 is a live-service game, its mechanics and progression systems continue to change through updates and new seasons.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Proves Depth Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
Minecraft Dungeons 2 seems to be going in the exact opposite direction. Just like the original title, it remains classless, so players can have full control over how they build their character, rather than committing to a huge traditional skill tree. However, player now have more capes, armor, and talisman slots, alongside their weapons and artifacts, which provides considerably more room for experimenting with different builds. Enchantments are also more flexible. Players can collect them and choose which piece of gear to apply them to instead of relying on RNG to dictate what appears on their loot.

Moreover, the entire system appears to be extremely well-explained, and the explanations are delivered in such a way that nobody has to sit there scratching their head while going over a huge document full of instructions. There are dedicated screens that break down the effects players can expect from different enchantments, weapons, armor, and talismans, making it very easy to figure out what a build needs. Additionally, for those who are ready to dig deeper, there are detailed stats as well, but they are not in any way necessary to enjoy the game properly.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Could Change How ARPGs Handle Complexity
Of course, none of this means that players should all collectively cancel Diablo 4 and throw it in the trash. Complexity often has its own value when it comes to ARPGs. No matter how frustrating the experience is, there is often that sense of accomplishment that only solving a difficult task can bring. Titles such as Diablo 4 and Path of Exile are examples of how this exact complexity can become like a game within the game, with a lot of people valuing this exact quality. However, Minecraft Dungeons 2 simply shows that depth and confusion are not necessarily a package deal.
Moreover, Minecraft Dungeons‘ system is certainly a good way to make sure the game’s chances of appealing to both beginners and hardcore gamers are higher. It provides a certain level of difficulty as well, but this doesn’t come from trying to figure out what the game is telling; instead, it comes from making interesting decisions along the way. In any case, Minecraft Dungeons 2‘s approach could easily encourage other ARPG titles to reconsider the way they present complex ideas. It would make sense that simplifying everything could end up hurting a game, since most of the satisfaction would disappear. However, it’s not unreasonable to aim for a healthier balance between depth and accessibility.
