Mojang has officially revealed a brand-new sequel to one of Minecraft‘s most popular spin-off series, with Minecraft Dungeons 2 teased to launch sometime in 2026. The sandbox survival game has become one of the biggest names in the gaming industry since its initial launch in 2011, becoming the best-selling video game of all time. Minecraft has seen numerous ports and some spinoffs, ranging from story-based adventure games, like Minecraft: Story Mode, to action-strategy game Minecraft Legends. However, Minecraft Dungeons has been one of the franchise’s most popular spin-offs.
Mojang debuted Minecraft Dungeons as a new spin on Minecraft‘s traditional formula in early 2020, shifting the franchise into an action-adventure dungeon crawler. Dungeons whisks players into Minecraft‘s Overworld on a quest to defeat the Arch-Illager, hacking and slashing their way through various environments in the franchise’s signature pixelated style. Minecraft Dungeons received multiple expansions following its release, adding new dungeons, weapons, items, and more to the game. Now, Mojang has confirmed that the Minecraft Dungeons spin-off series will officially be making its return in the near future.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 Is Launching in 2026
Minecraft officially debuted the announcement trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2 on March 21, showing off a brief teaser for the game. The trailer sets up Dungeons 2 as a sequel to the original game, taking place an unspecified amount of time after the events of Minecraft Dungeons. The video shows off the Minecraft spin-off’s main hub village ablaze and in ruins, while teasing new areas like the Deep Dark as a major new location players will visit. Mojang confirmed that Minecraft Dungeons 2 will release for all major current-gen consoles, as well as the Nintendo Switch and PC, at an unspecified date in 2026.

The brief snippets of Minecraft Dungeons 2‘s trailer already set up plenty of potential plot points for the new game. Dungeons 2‘s announcement suggests that players will be grappling with a brand-new enemy in the aftermath of the events of the original game. The inclusion of the Deep Dark likely hints at potential new enemies inspired by the Warden, which serves as the only enemy to spawn in the underground biome in the main game. The trailer also ends at the mysterious portal found in Minecraft‘s Ancient City structures, which should serve as a major plot device within Dungeons 2.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 looks to serve as another spin-off aiming to expand the lore of the world of Minecraft. The first Minecraft Dungeons borrowed many elements from Minecraft, like Illagers and The End, and made them central to the game’s plot, letting players dive deeper into the franchise’s lore. The many expansions for Minecraft Dungeons also suggest Dungeons 2 will likely receive similar post-launch support, adding even more environments for players to explore alongside the continuation of the game’s story.
Minecraft Dungeons 2‘s official reveal came as part of a jam-packed Minecraft Live broadcast that featured plenty of news about the franchise. Minecraft showcased its newest biome during the presentation, giving a first look at the Sulfur Cave biome and the new sulfur and cinnabar blocks players can find there. Mojang also showed off several new baby mobs coming to the game with the launch of the Tiny Takeover update, adding baby forms of the sheep, turtle, and chicken, among others. Minecraft fans should have plenty to look forward to in the near future, between big updates to the main game and a brand-new spin-off to enjoy.
