Minecraft’s Switch 2 Upgrade Makes One Nintendo Mash-Up Worth Revisiting

Minecraft is finally coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, and it’s bringing Vibrant Visuals as a new way for Nintendo gamers to see the infinitely blocky world. Nintendo and Mojang are also updating the Super Mario Mash-Up, the Mario-themed pack exclusive to Nintendo’s versions of the game, specifically to make use of those new graphics. And as a package, that adds up to the best-looking Minecraft that has ever run on Nintendo hardware, and another reason to dust off one of the game’s oldest pieces of exclusive content.

That’s a pretty big deal, because while Minecraft on Nintendo platforms seems like a match made in heaven, certain technical restraints have always left it as a version players largely settled for. That sounds harsher than intended, of course, but the fact is, outside of mobile, the original Switch release was the one that ran roughest and looked plainest, and it got by on being portable and having Mario in the box. The Switch 2 version looks set to turn that around, and the mash-up, which turns ten this year, is the best argument for going back.

New Steam Soulslike Blends Elden Ring With Minecraft, And It’s an MMO

A brand-new Steam soulslike blends the best of Elden Ring and Minecraft, turning it into an MMORPG in the process.

Vibrant Visuals Reaches the Mushroom Kingdom

For context, Vibrant Visuals is Mojang’s official graphical overhaul for the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. It began rolling out to supported platforms in 2025 with features like directional lighting and shadows, volumetric fog, and water that reflects the world around it. The original Switch never got that upgrade, most likely for hardware reasons, but Nintendo’s announcement confirms that Switch 2 will render Minecraft with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default; players will land in their worlds with the new look on from the start.

And as someone who plays primarily on Java Edition, I must admit I’m a bit jealous that Vibrant Visuals still hasn’t reached my version of the game. It’s a very good thing that Switch 2 owners will get it on day one, though. The visual update coming to the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, one of the main internal draws to the package for quite some time now, is no slouch, either.

The Super Mario Mash-Up Is Ten Years Old and Still Nintendo’s Best Minecraft Perk

The Super Mario Mash-Up first arrived on Wii U in May 2016, but it has followed Minecraft across Nintendo hardware ever since, bundling with the Switch version at launch. The pack’s centerpiece is the skin selection, which includes 40 characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser. It also includes a resource pack that gives the entire game a colorful Mario makeover and music from Super Mario 64, plus a pre-built world to explore, with landmarks like Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza rebuilt in blocks.

As it comes to the Switch 2, all of these features are being updated to support Vibrant Visuals. The payoff should be easy to picture: Delfino Plaza is a harbor town and Peach’s Castle sits behind a moat, so reflective water and directional sunlight are the features most likely to change how they feel. Before booting up the Mash-Up with a friend or sibling on the couch, though, it’s important to know there are some sadder trade-offs, too.

A Simpler Split-Screen and Other Questions

For one, Nintendo’s own footnote states that Vibrant Visuals is “not available in some gameplay, including split-screen.” On other Bedrock platforms, the game falls back to its standard rendering whenever multiple players are connected locally, so it’s reasonable to expect the same here, but that still means that one of the Switch’s signature ways to play won’t see the upgrade. It’s a real trade-off, though hardly a dealbreaker, since handheld, docked solo, and online sessions should all get the full treatment, but anyone picturing a couch co-op tour of Peach’s Castle in new lighting should temper expectations.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the rest of the package is still less-than-clearly defined right now. Nintendo has confirmed a digital upgrade path for anyone who already owns Minecraft on the original Switch, but it hasn’t said what that upgrade will cost or how existing worlds will make the jump, with more details still to come. Certain supported Marketplace content will be able to use Vibrant Visuals as well, but the jury is still out in terms of which pieces of content are or are not compatible—so the pitch for Switch 2 owners, as it stands, is mostly about how the base game and the Mash-Up looks.

Nintendo’s Minecraft Gets Even Closer to Parity

I do think that this is a strong step in the right direction toward parity across game versions, though, as the trade that came with playing Minecraft on Nintendo (giving up visual fidelity and performance for portability and Mario skins) was a hard one for a lot of players. The Switch 2 version shifts that balance even more, since the platform that used to trail behind is getting a graphical mode Java players are still waiting on, all while keeping the exclusive content it always had. Split-screen and unanswered retail questions aside, the Nintendo version now stands closer to level with the other consoles visually while still having something none of them can offer—a strange place for it to land after nearly a decade as the fallback option.

Ultimately, though, the Vibrant Visuals update to the Mash-Up is the strongest case made here, as I see it. It’s fitting, too, that it comes now, ten years after its debut. For anyone who spent hours poking around Peach’s Castle on a Wii U or the original Switch, it’s a good excuse to go back, at the very least.
