Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 introduces a useful new Gunsmith feature that lets players customize where an equipped optic sits along the weapon’s top rail, changing its appearance and potentially its feel without affecting underlying performance. The addition, which may have gone somewhat unnoticed during the game’s launch weekend, serves as yet another example of how Modern Warfare 4 aims to once again raise the bar for customization in the long-running military shooter franchise.
As was the case with many Call of Duty games, weapon customization is a major part of Modern Warfare 4‘s meta progression system. To that end, Infinity Ward opted to expand its existing systems with even more granular controls and options, including the so-called Gunny (short for “Gunnery Sergeant”) assistant capable of assembling weapon configurations around different engagement ranges. The newly introduced “Optic Rail Placement” feature is a much smaller addition by comparison, but similarly gives players another way to tailor individual weapons to their preferences.
How Modern Warfare 4 Lets Players Reposition Their Optics
True to its self-explanatory name, Optic Rail Placement allows players to move an equipped sight forward or backward along the weapon’s top Picatinny rail, also commonly referred to as its optic rail, from the Gunsmith interface. Infinity Ward describes the setting as entirely cosmetic, with the adjustment changing where the sight sits relative to the operator rather than affecting any of the weapon’s underlying stats. Modern Warfare 4 players can preview each change from the ADS perspective while adjusting the Optic Rail Placement slider.
Moving an optical sight along the rail changes the resulting ADS view in an intuitive way: positioning it farther forward makes the sight appear smaller and generally leaves more of the surrounding screen unobstructed, while moving it closer makes it populate a bigger proportion of the screen from the operator’s first-person perspective. Placement can therefore affect how a given optic-equipped weapon in Modern Warfare 4 feels while aiming and how its movement is perceived during sustained fire, even though the setting itself does not reduce recoil, improve accuracy, or alter any other performance stat.

Call of Duty Has Experimented With Picatinny Rail Adjustments Before
The underlying concept has precedent in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reboot’s Weapon Tuning system, which offered substantially deeper attachment customization. Once a weapon reached its maximum level in the 2022 shooter, compatible optics could include an Eye Position slider that adjusted their presentation between near and far settings, producing a similar change in sight picture. Modern Warfare 4‘s implementation of this idea is more narrowly focused, however, since players are directly repositioning the optic itself along the weapon rather than manipulating an abstract tuning value. Optic Rail Placement may also be perceived as more intuitive to preview because its effects can be shown from a live ADS perspective, although that will ultimately depend on individual preference.
As with the rest of Gunsmith’s features, Optic Rail Placement is an entirely optional addition to Modern Warfare 4. By its very nature, this kind of granular customization is likely to appeal more to competitive Call of Duty players who obsess over every detail than to casual fans.
