Activision is officially removing controversial video footage included in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 that was taken from the 2022 Itaewon Disaster, which resulted in 160 deaths. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s main campaign focuses heavily on a renewed military conflict on the Korean peninsula.
Activision officially made a statement in response to backlash regarding the inclusion of Itaewon Disaster footage in Modern Warfare 4. A spokesperson for the company issued a public apology for the use of the traumatic footage and said that it did not “intend to reference or trivialize the Itaewon Disaster” with its inclusion. Activision expressed its sympathy to the affected families and that the footage’s original intent was to provide a “realistic and immersive experience,” not to reference a real-world tragedy. Activision is expected to remove the Itaewon Disaster footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in an update on November 12.
