In a recent update, Infinity Ward has nerfed one of the more controversial perks in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, calling into question how players were using it instead of how it was intended to be used. As longtime fans know, the launch is just the beginning for this franchise and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is no exception as Infinity Ward continues to make adjustments and other improvements to the game based on data and player feedback.
The launch window of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is still going strong, though the game is about to enter its next phase. Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 is set to begin officially on November 6, bringing the first batch of post-launch content to the game. As expected, new weapons, maps, and operators will be joining the game, including a special Crash variant for the Kill Block game mode. Even DMZ is getting in on the new season by introducing a new location called XO1 which appears to contain valuable loot, though players will have to deal with tougher enemies. Prior to Season 1, Infinity Ward continues to make adjustments to the core experience, including a major nerf to the popular Possum perk.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Possum Perk Nerf
The Possum perk in Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ mode has been a hot topic of debate in the community over how it’s being used. In fact, it seems Infinity Ward agrees, as the perk has been hit with a nerf to make it less viable as a combat mechanic. Many players used the ability to simply charge into battle and if they were taken down, they’d pop back up immediately and extract their revenge on the other player. While the perk itself does allow players to self-revive after being killed once per match, it apparently was being abused a bit more than Infinity Ward would have liked.

To stop the perk from turning into a combat mechanic, Possum is now blocked from being used while the team that killed the player is nearby or until 4 minutes have passed. Infinity Ward confirms that the range and duration can be tweaked, but ultimately, the studio wants the perk to be used more like a survival mechanic and not a way for players to exact immediate revenge. The studio will be keeping an eye on this perk moving forward and will make tweaks as necessary.
In addition to the Possum perk nerf, the update for October 28 made a number of adjustments to various weapons in Modern Warfare 4. Weapon balancing is always a big element to FPS games like Call of Duty, and will remain an ongoing process over the coming months. For now, 4 weapons in particular were nerfed in the update, including the Han 86, Oden, APOC-338, and FiNN LMG. However, 9 other weapons have also received a number of buffs from faster aiming, damage improvements, and more. Weapons getting a slight boost include the M4, Kastov 762, Patriot XMR, Type 73, and all five launch SMGs.
Once Season 1 does roll around, fans will have special modes available to them as well, though they won’t be around forever. The Wager Match Event kicks off during Season 1 across Warzone, DMZ, and as a special Gunfight multiplayer mode where players can essentially wager on the amount of trophies they’ve collected so far to win and earn a bigger share. Mastery rewards, such as blueprints, operator skins, camos, and Apex Attachments can be unlocked during the event, and, those who get into the Top 3, they can even compete for extra rewards.
