Adrian has been writing, critiquing, and thinking about games since he first picked up an N64 controller many years ago. These days he writes reviews, news, and features for Game Rant and believes games should be held to the same artistic standards as books, movies, and television shows. When he’s not writing for Game Rant, Adrian writes even more reviews for Sirus Gaming and likes to get nerdy about tech and retro games at HackerNoon. Outside the gaming world, he spends plenty of time enjoying movies or listening to every genre of music under the sun. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has attracted more than 200,000 concurrent Steam players during its opening weekend, although Infinity Ward’s latest shooter hasn’t quite matched the launch of Black Ops 6. The early Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 numbers nevertheless point to a much stronger start than last year’s Black Ops 7.

The latest Steam player numbers for the shared Call of Duty app used by both MW4 and BO6 show a peak of 227,434 concurrent Steam users during Modern Warfare 4‘s launch window, compared with roughly 306,460 around the release of Black Ops 6 in October 2024. The numbers come via SteamDB and put MW4 about 26% behind BO6, with a gap of roughly 79,000 concurrent users. It is still a considerable improvement over Black Ops 7, however, which failed to generate anything close to either game’s launch spike at roughly 100,000 concurrent Steam users during its launch weekend. So, while Modern Warfare 4 hasn’t matched Black Ops 6‘s enormous Steam debut, it has already put considerable distance between itself and Call of Duty‘s 2025 release.
