That has definitely changed within the past decade, though. Whether it’s the success of the Fallout TV show or games like God of War being next in line to get live-action adaptations, Hollywood is now looking to gaming as a source of inspiration.
Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us are beautiful demonstrations of how stellar gameplay can be balanced with a story that is just as heartfelt and deep as anything you can see at a movie theater. Of course, this doesn’t count for all games. Not every game needs to be a grand cinematic journey. Sometimes it’s great to just turn your brain off and revel in awesome gameplay, but there is definitely something special about being sucked into a game that has equally great storytelling and acting.

Modern Warfare 4 Continuing A-List Hollywood Casting Is Mostly a Good Thing, But It Shouldn’t Overshadow the Entire Industry
I will admit that I’m a sucker for reveals like Mads Mikkelsen in Modern Warfare 4 and Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. However, the industry needs to avoid relying on Hollywood casting as the only source of talent. There are both longtime voice acting veterans and newcomers who are trying to break into the industry, and I would imagine seeing so many high-profile celebrities being cast in games over and over gets disheartening very fast.
It’s not like Hollywood actors being in video games is anything new. The main difference now is that their casting is being heavily pushed in marketing to sell games.
Some of the best acting performances in gaming are from actors who aren’t household names outside the gaming world. Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, Nolan North, and Jennifer Hale continue to bring forth unforgettable performances, while actors like Ashley Johnson and Debra Wilson have been able to craft incredible careers by jumping back and forth between film, TV, and video games.
Having one or two A-listers in the mix is a great way to bring attention to a project, but there needs to be plenty of room left for actors who have dedicated themselves to voice acting and motion capture work. Just because someone is super famous doesn’t make them right for the role. Megan Fox in Mortal Kombat 1 is Exhibit A. There have also been times when the industry has tried to pull in non-actors to fill roles, like NBA 2K15. The studio used the real-life NBA ball players to act as themselves in the story, and it’s still remembered as some of the worst voice acting ever in a game. In their defense, they’re basketball players, not actors, but it’s baffling that 2K went through with it and didn’t bring in professional actors to take over.
Gaming Hopefully Continues to Strike a Balance With Its A-List Cameos
The good news is that Hollywood superstars haven’t overshadowed the industry yet, and it hopefully stays that way. There is plenty of room for both parties to share the spotlight and bring out great performances from one another. Another benefit of actors like Mads Mikkelsen continuing to act in video games is that it can potentially convince the Hollywood elites that gaming is just as worthy of major awards recognition as film and television.
Yes, there are The Game Awards and its acting categories that bring these performances the recognition they should get, but gaming also deserves a spot at longtime established events like The Oscars. Ashley Johnson as Ellie and Troy Baker as Joel opened a lot of people’s eyes up to what video game acting can be. The performances can be just as powerful, and more film stars joining the mix hopefully helps shed more light on that issue. Only time will tell, of course, but Mads Mikkelsen and other A-list film and TV actors embracing gaming over the years has helped expand the industry’s reach.
