Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Team Cherry promised new content long ago. There’s a Nintendo Direct. Team Cherry fans tune in hoping for news, but there was none to be announced. First, it was Hollow Knight: Silksong that players were waiting for with bated breath. But now, after that game’s release a year ago, the cycle continues with Silksong‘s Sea of Sorrows DLC.
In December, Team Cherry shared the news that it was working on an expansion for its long-awaited sequel to Hollow Knight. “New areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in our nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year,” the announcement read. Silksong‘s famously tight-lipped developers have only shared two updates in the nine months since announcing Sea of Sorrows.
One in February celebrated the launch of Hollow Knight on the Nintendo Switch 2, while the last one came a month later and was just information on the latest Silksong patch. And that’s it. That’s all we’ve gotten from them. Team Cherry even passed up acknowledging Silksong‘s one-year anniversary last week, which would have been the perfect time to share an update.
In the months after Silksong‘s launch, the developers shared that they did not intend the game to take as long as it did to release. They said Silksong was originally planned to be DLC for Hollow Knight but that over time that project morphed into a ginormous standalone sequel. While there’s technically still time left on the clock for a shadowdrop sometime this year, the immense success of Silksong will likely fund Team Cherry’s relatively small, independent dev team indefinitely, so there’s no pressure for them to put out anything on time.
With the team’s penchant for embracing scope creep, that familiar “Silksong when??” panic is starting to set in again among some fans. Over on the Silksong subreddit, fans are self-soothing by posting fake release date announcements and…memes about Scotland, because that’s just a normal thing to do when your favorite indie studio starts edging you with release date news again.
But if there’s a studio that has earned the grace to cook for as long as it needs to, it’s Team Cherry.
