Morrowind is Making an Official Comeback

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind remains one of Bethesda’s most beloved RPGs, despite being more than 24 years old, and there’s a new way to play it in the big 2026. Originally released in 2002, Morrowind helped establish many of the features that would eventually define the future Elder Scrolls games, while offering an experience that still feels distinct from Oblivion and Skyrim. Its unusual setting, relatively unforgiving gameplay, and emphasis on player freedom have helped it maintain a dedicated following, even as the series has moved on to bigger and more technologically advanced games.

Of course, Morrowind hasn’t exactly been forgotten, especially by its community. Fans have spent years developing mods, graphical improvements, and ambitious projects that expand or modernize the classic RPG. OpenMW, an open-source recreation of Morrowind’s engine, has been particularly important in keeping the game accessible on modern hardware. Using OpenMW, one fan has managed to make Morrowind playable in a unique interface.

Bethesda’s Next Game After Elder Scrolls 6 is Now Official

Fans of Bethesda’s games should take note of what’s coming next from the studio after it’s done with The Elder Scrolls 6.

Morrowind is Now Playable on Nintendo DS-Like Android Handhelds

Now, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is making something of a comeback on dual-screen handheld devices, thanks to a fan-made project called OpenMW-DS. Developed by Josh Daniels, OpenMW-DS brings Morrowind to compatible Android handhelds with a Nintendo DS-inspired interface, including support for the AYN Thor. The project reached version 1.0.0 earlier this year, marking a major milestone for an effort to make the classic RPG playable in a completely different format. Importantly, this isn’t an official Bethesda release or an actual Nintendo DS port, but a community-developed adaptation built around OpenMW.

“Should’ve named it Thorrowind”

What makes OpenMW-DS particularly interesting is how it uses the additional screen. Instead of simply displaying Morrowind across 2 screens, the project takes advantage of the handheld’s layout to separate gameplay from interface elements, giving players access to useful information and controls without constantly interrupting their adventure. It’s a fitting approach for Morrowind, an RPG filled with menus, inventory management, exploration, and character statistics. OpenMW-DS also supports additional content, including the massive fan-made Tamriel Rebuilt project, which has spent years expanding the playable world beyond the original game’s boundaries.

OpenMW-DS is also part of a much larger effort to preserve Morrowind, highlighting the importance of fan-made projects in keeping older games alive. As technology advances and hardware becomes outdated, game preservation is an increasingly important issue, particularly for titles that don’t receive as many remasters and ports as Skyrim. OpenMW-DS takes things a step further by bringing Morrowind to new hardware, demonstrating how preservation doesn’t necessarily mean keeping a game exactly as it was in 2002. Sometimes, it means finding entirely new ways to enjoy it.

Bethesda’s next major Elder Scrolls game remains TES 6, but there’s clearly still plenty of interest in the franchise’s older entries. Morrowind may never receive the same official treatment as Skyrim, yet its community continues to demonstrate how much life the RPG still has left.
