Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection has just received a new free update that adds major features, chief among them being cross-platform play. Developed by the retro game specialists at Digital Eclipse, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection compiles 23 different Mortal Kombat games across arcade, console, and handheld versions. This collection is not limited to mainline entries, as it also includes several spin-off titles. This includes some of the franchise’s more infamous entries, like Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.
Notably, this collection includes the WaveNet version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, a limited-release arcade test version of the game presumed lost after its 1997 release. These original Mortal Kombat games have also been improved in several ways to offer a multitude of modern features, including online multiplayer and rollback netcode. This collection allows hardcore fighting fans to experience these old-school Mortal Kombat games on modern platforms alongside the franchise’s more recent entries, like 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Free Update Includes Cross-Play and VRR
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection has received a new free update that offers some notable features to the games, and players can access it right now. The most notable inclusion is cross-platform play on all systems, or Krossplay, in keeping with the game’s typography style. While Krossplay is turned off by default, players can enable it in Settings to play online with gamers across all platforms in Quick Play and Online Arcade modes.

This update also allows gamers to play two-on-two matches online across titles like the fan-favorite Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 4, and both versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Furthermore, this update adds variable refresh rate (VRR) support across compatible devices and platforms, which Digital Eclipse notes will “sync the monitor to the non-standard frame rates that were used on the original arcade games.” This will improve the overall presentation and should help minimize the game’s input lag. The newest update to Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection also adds new localization options and other minor bug fixes.
The latest Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection update adds some pretty massive new options to these classic fighting games, and its arrival is perfectly timed with the upcoming release of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie. The addition of cross-platform play allows these older Mortal Kombat games to maintain a strong online community across the game’s various systems, including PC, and both last-generation and current-generation PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch devices. It’s worth noting that not every game in the collection is compatible with this new feature, as Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not compatible with Krossplay on the original Nintendo Switch version.

It appears this will be the final major update to Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, which likely explains why it includes so many major new features. While Digital Eclipse notes that it will “continue to identify bug fixes and improvements,” none will be as major as this update, and Digital Eclipse is unlikely to add further titles to the collection. Even so, this new update should give fans plenty more to enjoy in these classic titles while they await NetherRealm’s next major Mortal Kombat game, which may arrive after the recently leaked Injustice 3.
