Mortal Shell 2 Reveals Open World and 3 Playable Shells

Mortal Shell 2 Reveals Open World and 3 Playable Shells

Ahead of its release later this year, Mortal Shell 2 has revealed gameplay that showcases its open world, along with three playable Shells. While Mortal Shell 2 does not have an official release date yet, publisher Playstack and developer Cold Symmetry have pulled back the curtain on the action-RPG, giving fans a better idea of what to expect from the dark fantasy world.

First announced at Summer Game Fest 2025, Mortal Shell 2 is the latest project in development by Cold Symmetry. Previously working on the original Mortal Shell, the developer has made a name for itself in the action-RPG space, with the first game selling over 2 million copies. However, the now 30-person team is looking to push things further with a standalone sequel. While Mortal Shell 2 caught the eyes of many fans during the world-premiere trailer last year, Cold Symmetry is ready to showcase more of the game.

Dark fantasy co-op games can be the holy grail of multiplayer releases, and these titles are perfect to play with friends.

Mortal Shell 2 Showcases Open-World Gameplay, Including Boss Fights

This new glimpse of Mortal Shell 2 comes via a nearly 12-minute gameplay video, revealing more about combat and open-world design. Among the highlights, three playable Shells have been detailed. These include Tiel, The Acolyte; Eredrim, The Venerable; and Proxima, The Broodseeker. Besides looking visually distinct, players can swap between these Shells, each providing different abilities and approaches to battle. As seen in the gameplay showcase, combat will play an important role in the game, as numerous enemies and bosses wander the open world of Mortal Shell 2. Fortunately, players can equip various weapons, including melee and ranged options, to better suit their play style and the specific situations they might find themselves in. There is also no depleting stamina to slow players down, making battles feel more action-packed.

Beyond detailing some of the combat options of the action-RPG, Cold Symmetry has given an in-depth look at the open world of Mortal Shell 2. Notably, the game will feature a much more expansive world compared to the original Mortal Shell, with the map showing varied terrain to traverse and many paths to take. Nevertheless, the developer aims to keep the experience “compact” in an effort to “respect the player’s time.” In the gameplay reveal, fans received an idea of what some of the environments of the game will look like. For example, the main character could be seen fighting their way through dilapidated fortresses, fog-filled forests, icy wastelands, and much more. Additionally, there are over 60 “handcrafted” dungeons for players to explore during the game, and a fast travel system should help players get around the world.

While exploring the world of Mortal Shell 2, players will inevitably run into their fair share of bosses, and several of these were revealed in the recent gameplay reveal. In particular, a full fight with a boss known as Solnir Stillblade was shown, which highlighted one of the abilities of Eredrim, The Venerable. While all the intricacies of the game’s Shells have likely not been revealed yet, they could prove pivotal in overcoming some of the game’s more challenging fights. Additionally, there are more weapons to choose from to help take down bosses.

Playstack Announces Mortal Shell 2: Revered Edition for PS5

While a release date for Mortal Shell 2 has not been officially announced, players can expect the title to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam later in 2026. Furthermore, Playstack has unveiled Mortal Shell 2: Revered Edition. As noted by the publisher, this is a special physical version that comes in a collector’s box and includes an artbook, exclusive steelcase, and limited-edition fine art prints. It should be mentioned that the Revered Edition of the game is only for PS5. Both this special edition and the standard physical edition for PS5 are already available for pre-order, with the Obsidian Harbinger and Skeletal Harbinger skins being offered as bonuses for doing so.

As the release of Mortal Shell 2 draws nearer, it will be interesting to see what else gets revealed. Fans already know the game will feature new Shells along with some returning ones from the original Mortal Shell. Nevertheless, the developer has made clear that Mortal Shell 2 is a “fully self-contained sequel,” meaning players do not need to have played the first game to get the most out of the experience. With this in mind, gamers looking for a new dark fantasy action-RPG should keep Cold Symmetry’s upcoming game on their radar.
