Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann recently commented on The Last of Us and the future of the popular franchise. The Last of Us hit the scene in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim, with many pointing to the original game as one of the best games ever made. The Last of Us Part 2 earned similar acclaim and won numerous awards, but certain plot developments proved controversial with some fans. In any case, The Last of Us franchise is still going strong, with all kinds of merch, remakes, ports, and a hit HBO series keeping interest in it alive.
The Last of Us is currently filming Season 3, which is expected to premiere on HBO at some point in 2027. The third season of the show will adapt Abby’s side of the story, with much of it running concurrently with Ellie’s journey from Season 2. It will end with the conclusion of the second game, bringing the story to a close. Season 3 will be the end of the show, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more Last of Us for fans to enjoy.
Naughty Dog Has More Last of Us Projects in the Works
Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, director and writer of The Last of Us Part 2, recently told The Washington Post that Naughty Dog is “not done with The Last of Us.” Druckmann went as far to say that there’s “a couple projects” that are in the works that the studio will talk about “when the time is right.” Druckmann didn’t clarify if these projects are video games or something else, but it’s still enough to get fans excited about the franchise’s future. Druckmann was also asked about production of The Last of Us Season 3, but confirmed that Naughty Dog is no longer involved with the TV show.
Who’s That Character?

It’s anyone’s guess as to what Last of Us projects Druckmann is referring to. There have long been rumors that a Last of Us Part 3 is in active development at the studio and may very well be Naughty Dog’s next project after work is done on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. There was also a lot of work done on The Last of Us Online multiplayer project before it was canceled, so perhaps Naughty Dog will figure out a way to bring it back in some capacity.
As for what a third Last of Us game would entail, that’s anyone’s guess. It would make a lot of sense to bring Ellie back as she is incredibly popular with fans, but it also wouldn’t be surprising if Naughty Dog went in a completely different direction. Previous leaks and rumors about the game suggested that The Last of Us Part 3 will focus on a new group of characters, but that remains to be seen. It will likely be years before fans learn more about the game in any official capacity.
For now, Naughty Dog is busy with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Intergalactic is expected to launch in 2027 or 2028, but it being a no-show at the latest PlayStation State of Play has some fans worried. Hopefully, we see more Intergalactic sooner rather than later, so those concerns can be put to rest.
