Beloved PlayStation developer Naughty Dog has some exciting projects in the pipeline, including two that have been officially announced and another that has been leaked before its official reveal. Naughty Dog has produced some of the most critically-acclaimed video games of all time, dating back to its days making the original Crash Bandicoot games for the PS1. Naughty Dog followed the Crash games with the popular Jak and Daxter series before moving away from cartoony platformers to deliver more realistic third-person action games like Uncharted and post-apocalyptic horror epics in The Last of Us.
While Naughty Dog released a Last of Us 1 remake and a Last of Us 2 remaster for the PS5, the studio has otherwise not produced anything this entire generation so far. Luckily, the wait for Naughty Dog’s next game is nearly at an end, as it’s rumored that sci-fi action-adventure game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is releasing at some point in 2027. Naughty Dog has said that it’s going quiet when it comes to revealing any new information about the game for the rest of the year, though, so fans will have to wait until next year to learn more about what it has in store.
What is Next for Naughty Dog?
Some Naughty Dog fans are no doubt wondering what’s next for the studio after Intergalactic releases for PS5, whether that happens in 2027 or later. Naughty Dog itself has confirmed that it has multiple Last of Us projects in the works, but it stopped short of revealing exactly what those projects will entail. It’s possible that it will salvage the work it did on the canceled Last of Us multiplayer game in some fashion, or maybe Naughty Dog will instead turn its attention to a proper Last of Us Part 3. It’s really anyone’s guess until Naughty Dog itself decides to unveil the next Last of Us game, but the wait to see it in action may be longer than expected.
We know for sure that Naughty Dog is working on multiple Last of Us projects, but if recent leaks and rumors are to be believed, the studio’s next game after Intergalactic will be something else. If the leaks are accurate, a new Uncharted game is in active development at Naughty Dog as the studio’s next major release before any new Last of Us games materialize. Not much is known about the new Uncharted game except that it will be a brand-new release, not a remake, and that it will feature longtime series hero Nathan Drake in some capacity.
Of course, fans should take the claims about the leaked Uncharted 5 game with a grain of salt, but it would make sense. While Uncharted 4 wrapped the series’ story up nicely, the franchise is too big for PlayStation not to capitalize with new releases. Considering how long the wait has been between The Last of Us Part 2 and Intergalactic, though, it’s possible that the new Uncharted will potentially release for the PlayStation 6 at this point.
Court documents previously suggested that Sony was planning to move forward with a PlayStation 6 console at some point in 2028. The ongoing RAM crisis, the state of the world’s economies, and other supply chain issues may potentially push these plans back, but if we assume that timeline is still right, then one has to imagine that the new Uncharted would be coming to next-gen hardware. Of course, Sony supported the PS4 for a long time with cross-gen releases, and so it could very well do the same when transitioning from the PS5 to the PS6.
