New Cozy Game Took 10 Minutes to Prove Stardew Valley Doesn’t Define the Genre

Over 10 years ago, Stardew Valley was released, designed and marketed as a love letter to classic farm life sims like Harvest Moon, and it effortlessly took the gaming industry by storm. To this day, it remains the definitive cozy experience—apart from franchises like Animal Crossing—and it has had such an impact on the indie gaming scene that countless developers, whether solo or part of a team, have been inspired by it to make their own, similar games. As a result, it’s exceedingly easy to find Stardew Valley-likes, due to the sheer number that are out there, as well as the fact that typing “games like Stardew Valley” into Google takes two seconds and can offer up a plethora of worthwhile results. However, after playing the demo for the upcoming cozy game Farming Camp by Innerfire Studios, I’m convinced that, sometimes, being compared to Stardew Valley can actually be a bad thing, if the immediate interpretation is far different from what the game has to offer.

On the surface, from a strictly visual standpoint, Farming Camp looks nearly identical to Stardew Valley. The rich, bright color palette and pixel graphics, when paired with the cozy genre label, are enough to bring ConcernedApe’s farm life sim to mind for anyone with even the slightest idea of what’s going on in the gaming industry. The word “farming” being in the title certainly doesn’t help with that comparison either. And if I’m being upfront and honest, when I clicked on the “download” button for Farming Camp‘s demo, I assumed that’s exactly what I was getting into. I thought this would just be some other iteration of what Stardew Valley had already accomplished, only with a mechanic here or there that might be enough to set it apart. But even after just 10 minutes with Farming Camp, it became one of my most anticipated games of 2026 as I let out a sigh that took all of my troubles with it, and I saw how easily one popular farm life sim can cast a shadow over those that might look like it from afar but hide something much deeper and more captivating within.

PSA: PS5 Getting a Dark Stardew Valley Alternative in Fall 2026

Fans of Stardew Valley have a dark alternative to look forward to on PS5 (and other consoles) come Fall 2026.

Farming Camp Actually Isn’t Like Stardew Valley at All—And That’s the Best Thing About It

I don’t know what I was expecting upon getting into Farming Camp. I saw the tags on Steam, including “interactive fiction” and “female protagonist,” but I still assumed this would be like any other Stardew Valley-like with a twist. To my surprise, it didn’t take long at all for Farming Camp to prove it was something else entirely, and I personally think that’s the best thing about it.

It’s not that there are too many games out there like Stardew Valley, as I’m not sure if that’s even possible. I also understand that I probably would never have downloaded the demo for this game if it weren’t for my love for ConcernedApe’s farm life sim, so Farming Camp at least has it to thank for that. It’s more so the thought of how easily a gem like this can hide when a giant like Stardew Valley is out there dominating the sea now overflowing with other games like it. Because there are so many, and because the subconscious thought is that none of them could ever even hope to compete with it, Stardew Valley remains the comparison that defines them before they ever get the chance to define themselves.

I’ve only played the demo for Farming Camp, but all I can say is that this game already deserves more than to be called yet another game like Stardew Valley, because it’s simply not that. Yes, it has farming, yes, it has pixel graphics, and yes, it has NPCs that are more than worth a conversation or two—but the comparisons really stop there. I love the task-oriented gameplay of farm life sims like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, but if we’re boiling everything down to cozy, Farming Camp, even in its limited demo, already has those games beat. Not at one moment did I ever feel stressed, overwhelmed, or stretched for time while playing Farming Camp‘s demo, and there have been plenty of times when I’ve felt all of those things when playing Stardew Valley.

Farming Camp’s Key Features

  • STORY-DRIVEN FARMING – Follow Alessandra’s journey through Evertree’s competitive farming camp.
  • TEAM-BASED CHORES – Assign tasks, solve problems, and build friendships together.
  • COLORFUL CAST – Meet lovable campers with distinct personalities, stories, and talents.
  • CAMP COMPETITION – Earn points through chores, classes, missions, and minigames.
  • FARM ACTIVITIES – Grow crops, care for animals, fish, and cook meals.
  • HAND-DRAWN WORLD – Explore a charming top-down setting filled with delightful details.
  • HEARTFELT HUMOR – Enjoy silly surprises, teenage drama, and memorable camp moments.

Farming Camp follows Alessandra, a teenager spending her summer at Evertree Farming Camp, where she joins a team with two other campers and competes against everyone else for points. That competition gives the story some direction, but it never made the game feel like it was pressuring me to turn every second into progress. In that way, Farming Camp is the definition of cozy and far from what I expected when I first started.

Each day has Alessandra taking on activities around Evertree while helping her team climb the camp rankings. She can tend crops, care for animals, fish, cook, attend classes, complete missions, and participate in mini-games, with certain chores assigned to her teammates based on their strengths. The basic loop is still built around getting things done, but the story and character relationships keep those tasks from feeling like boxes I was checking just to make a number go up.

Farming Camp Is a Game About Being More Than Doing

Instead of pushing you to do as much as you can in one day, Farming Camp is far more interested in immersing you in the experience of simply being at Evertree and getting to know everyone there. The dialogue is genuinely funny, and its characters already feel like people I want to spend more time with rather than NPCs I need to befriend for some eventual reward. I never found myself clicking through dialogue just to reach the next objective, because those conversations were often the part I was enjoying most.

Interestingly enough, the game’s soundtrack blew me away with how good it is. Farming Camp‘s music changes depending on where Alessandra is, what she’s doing, and even who she’s talking to, which gives certain characters and moments a personality of their own. It has some of the familiar warmth people might associate with Stardew Valley, but it integrates classic 8-bit melodies into the mix that help Farming Camp establish its own sound. At one point, I realized I had been grinning at the screen for several minutes, and that was when the game had me.

I’ve only played the demo for Farming Camp, but all I can say is that this game already deserves more than to be called yet another game like Stardew Valley, because it’s simply not that.

More importantly, I never felt like I was wasting time. Stardew Valley can occasionally make me feel like I need to squeeze every possible chore, conversation, and trip into the day before the sun goes down, even when I’m supposedly playing it to relax. Farming Camp gave me plenty to do, but I never felt pushed to optimize any of it. I could just follow Alessandra’s story and enjoy being at camp without wondering whether I was playing efficiently enough.

I’ve only seen a small piece of Farming Camp, so the full game could obviously become more demanding later on. Still, it took only around 10 minutes for the demo to make me forget whatever had been bothering me before I started playing, and very few cozy games have managed to do that so quickly. I went in expecting another Stardew Valley-like and came away with one of my most anticipated games of 2026, which is exactly why reducing Farming Camp to that comparison does it such a disservice.

Farming Camp will release on September 24, 2026 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. A downloadable demo of Farming Camp is available on Steam.
