New Final Fantasy 4 35th Anniversary Release Officially Revealed

Few video game franchises have managed to have as big a footprint on the industry as Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy 4 is no doubt one of the best Final Fantasy games at that. The series has spent decades pairing its biggest moments with themes that can immediately bring players back to a particular character, location, or scene, even years after the game itself was released. That has also made Final Fantasy‘s soundtrack a natural source of fan inspiration, with fans the world over flocking around each and every single OST.

Final Fantasy 4 is particularly notable in its footprint, soundtrack or otherwise, as the 1991 RPG helped establish many of the elements that would become staples of the series. Its story follows Cecil Harvey as he is pulled into a much larger conflict involving kingdoms, crystals, and an increasingly complicated cast of characters. Final Fantasy 4 also features a soundtrack from legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, giving its most memorable scenes an equally memorable musical identity.

Final Fantasy 4: All Versions, Ranked

Final Fantasy 4 has been ported, remastered, and remade over the years. What’s the best way to experience this classic title?

Final Fantasy 4 was originally released in July 1991 (Japan) and November 1991 (North America) for the Super NES. 2026 marks its 35th anniversary.

Square Enix Releases Final Fantasy 4: Themes of Love

Fans looking to bring a small piece of that musical history home can now find a Final Fantasy 4 Music Box based on one of the game’s most recognizable songs. Available through the Square Enix Store, the Final Fantasy 4 Music Box: Theme of Love recreates the song in music-box form and features Cecil and Rosa on the front of the case. The collectible is part of Square Enix’s broader series of music boxes dedicated to classic songs from the early years of Final Fantasy.

The Final Fantasy 4 music box is designed around the scene in which “Theme of Love” is heard, with Square Enix specifically using imagery from the games’ original moments to give each music box a stronger connection to the source material. The Final Fantasy 4 version measures approximately 5.99 x 3.50 x 5.00 centimeters, making it a fairly small collectible that can easily fit alongside other Final Fantasy merchandise. The current UK Square Enix Store listing has it priced at £14.99 (roughly $17.30 USD).

“Theme of Love” is also a fitting choice for Final Fantasy 4, as the song is closely associated with the love between FF4 protagonist Cecil and Rosa. Rather than simply putting a Final Fantasy logo on a generic music box, Square Enix has tied the design directly to the game’s characters and scenes. The Final Fantasy 4 music box works as both a small piece of merchandise and a reminder of one of the franchise’s earliest eras.

Final Fantasy 4 has received plenty of ports and rereleases over the years, but merchandise like this offers a different way to revisit the classic RPG. The Final Fantasy 4 Music Box – Theme of Love may be considerably smaller than the game itself, but its combination of one of the series’ classic songs and imagery of Cecil and Rosa makes it a fitting collectible for fans who still have a soft spot for the older Final Fantasy games.
