The Game Boy Color may be nearly three decades old, but new games continue to give Nintendo’s classic handheld a reason to be dusted off, with the latest expected in mid-to-late September 2026. Even beyond this upcoming title, new games for Game Boy Color continued to be announced, such as the recent confirmation that Buddy: The Video Game is coming to the GBC in 2026.
Developers have spent years finding ways to push old hardware beyond what seemed possible during its original lifespan, and the Game Boy Color has become one of the more interesting platforms for this modern retro movement. There is something particularly appealing about getting a brand-new cartridge that can be played on the same hardware that originally hosted games like Pokemon Crystal.
Kurohi is a New Game Boy Color Game Releasing in September 2026
Now, Kurohi releases on PC (via Steam) and as a legitimate Game Boy Color Cartridge (the more appealing option) in mid-to-late September. After raising more than $45,000 on Kickstarter from 695 backers on Kickstarter, independent developer Sergio Elisondo has not only finished Kurohi but also worked on assembly and shipping themselves, which is why the release date is not concrete. For those unfamiliar, Kurohi is a brand-new Metroidvania game coming to GBC with precision platforming, overhead exploration, and arcade-style shooting mechanics. There is also a central hub town inspired by The Legend of Zelda, along with buffs and upgrades that can be used to customize the player’s approach to combat and exploration.
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
The developer has now said the Metroidvania game is essentially complete, with production focused on getting in the rest of the cartridge components, assembling the cartridges, and shipping them to players. Backers are now expected to begin receiving their copies in mid-to-late September 2026, once the developer receives the final components needed to assemble the cartridges, and it’s still possible to pre-order copies of Kurohi right now at the link above (although Elisondo is only human and so fans should be patient).
The game’s inspirations are fairly broad, with Softinary Studios specifically pointing to The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Gradius, and classic point-and-click games. That combination is reflected in the game’s structure, which can move from traditional side-scrolling platforming and combat to overhead exploration and even space shooter segments. Despite that variety, the goal is for everything to exist as part of one cohesive adventure instead of feeling like a collection of unrelated modes, which players can decide for themselves once their copies of Kurohi come in.
Of course, the physical Game Boy Color release remains the main focus of the project and is one of its biggest appeals: it’s a brand new Game Boy Color game releasing in 2026. Beyond Steam, the developer is considering future releases on platforms including Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store, but again, the most interesting version remains the one that can be inserted into an actual Game Boy Color. Nostalgia is a massive factor in the way Kurohi has been developed and shipped, and hopefully that delivers on the developer’s hopes and expectations.
