Zelda and Diablo come together in a new game from the mind of Ron Gilbert, the creator of the beloved Monkey Island franchise. The game in question doesn’t have a name yet, as it’s very early in development, but Gilbert claims the title is set to bring elements of Zelda and Diablo together in one experience, with heavy inspiration coming from the former.
Developer Ron Gilbert’s claim to fame was with the creation of the Monkey Island franchise. Since then, Gilbert has assisted in forming the indie studio Terrible Toybox with fellow developer Gary Winnick. The team made Thimbleweed Park, a point-and-click adventure in the style of the genre’s classic games. Now, Terrible Toybox seems to have its sights set on an exciting new title that brings two incredibly different franchises together.

Silent Hill 2 remake developer Bloober Team teases a mysterious new game that saw it partner up with GTA publisher Take-Two Interactive.
The currently nameless game by Ron Gilbert has been in development since the beginning of this year, and it sets out to combine Zelda, Diablo, and Terrible Toybox’s own Thimbleweed Park. Visually quite similar to classic Zelda games, Gilbert seems to be taking most of his inspiration from the long-running Nintendo franchise. Despite updates from Gilbert via screenshots and small bits of insight, the Diablo inspiration isn’t quite as clear, but this likely means that there will be an emphasis on dungeon crawling.
New Game Brings Zelda and Diablo Together
Terrible Toybox’s website states that there is hope for the game to be ready by the end of this year or sometime in early 2025.
This is definitely a surprising trio of games to see named as inspiration for the same project, but that makes it even more intriguing. As of now, there is no clear confirmation about what platforms the game will be released on, but the retro Zelda-inspired artwork would make it perfect for the Switch. Gilbert has proven that he has a great ability to bring some great retro-inspired adventure titles to life, thanks to Thimbleweed Park, so it’s fascinating to think of Zelda and Diablo being thrown into the mix.
For fans of retro games that bring forth some heavy doses of nostalgia, this in-development title by the creator of Monkey Island is definitely a game many will want to keep an eye out for. There currently isn’t a set release date for the game, but there will hopefully be plenty of updates from Gilbert that give deeper insight into how he plans on combining the adventure of Zelda and the dungeon crawling of Diablo into one unique gaming experience.
