New GTA 6 Story Detail Confirmed

As more news continues to roll out about Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar has confirmed that the game will tell its story through chapters, like Red Dead Redemption 2 before it. The developer has given little away about GTA 6‘s story, but this is just a small hint of what is to come.

It has been an extremely long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6, which, by the time of the game’s planned release date, will be more than 13 years since the previous game in the series. However, with its November 19, 2026, release date seemingly locked in (for real this time), the wait is almost over. Upon release, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be the biggest game launch of all time by some margin, despite not initially planning to release on PC. The marketing for the game is finally ramping up as the long-awaited date draws ever closer.

Sony Teases Grand Theft Auto 6 ‘Plays Best’ on PS5

Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are going live soon, and Sony has just promised that the upcoming game “plays best” on PlayStation 5.

GTA 6 Story Has Chapters, Just Like RDR2

Following the reveal of GTA 6‘s Ultimate Edition details, one line about the extras has inadvertently revealed a key detail about the game’s story. Rockstar says that these additions “are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter.” The important word here is “chapter,” seemingly confirming that the Red Dead Redemption 2 feature is making its way to GTA 6.

Previous Grand Theft Auto titles have avoided the chapter system adopted first by Red Dead Redemption 2, making GTA 6 the first game in the series to do so. In RDR2, it allowed the narrative time to build in a structured way, and moved the player around the map in a way that felt natural. RDR2‘s map was enormous, and at this point, GTA 6‘s map size remains unclear, so it’s not known whether Rockstar intends to do the same with its upcoming game. The fact that players drive cars rather than ride horses in Grand Theft Auto makes navigating the map much quicker, which also makes it more difficult to restrict players to particular areas of the map. It will be interesting to see how these chapters manifest, whether it be in changes to the map or even potential time jumps.

The detail comes as part of the most recent GTA 6 information drop, which confirmed that the game will officially retail for $80 (and $100 for the Ultimate Edition). Rockstar also stressed that the game is a “single-player experience,” indicating that a GTA 6 online mode would not be available at launch.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously indicated that Grand Theft Auto 6‘s marketing will ramp up this summer, which officially began on June 21. It’s fair to say that the company has been true to its word, and gamers can expect to see plenty more of the game between now and November 19, 2026.
